Univision puts KIOT into trust

I have to admit I'm kind of surprised. Univision has filed to place KIOT 102.5 into a trust and indicates it will divest the station. Although it fits Univision's strategy of divesting stations not central to its business strategy, I'm surprised they're divesting their best signal, especially when 101.7 is one of the worst in the state. KQBT is also one of the worst performing stations in the entire company.

I agree! I cannot imagine why Univision would sell their best New Mexico signal. From the application, quote:

THE ASSIGNEE HEREIN IS A TRUST ESTABLISHED FOR THE PURPOSE OF COMPLYING WITH THE REQUIREMENT CONTAINED IN SHAREHOLDERS OF UNIVISION COMMUNICATIONS INC., MEMORANDUM OPINION AND ORDER, FCC 07-24 (RELEASED MARCH 27, 2007), THAT UNIVISION DIVEST ONE FM RADIO STATION IN THE ALBUQUERQUE MARKET. SPECIFICALLY, THE PURPOSE OF THE TRUST IS TO SELL STATION KIOT(FM), LOS LUNAS, NEW MEXICO, TO A THIRD PARTY AND TO OPERATE THE STATION UNTIL THE CONSUMMATION OF SUCH SALE. UNDER THE TRUST AGREEMENT, THE PROCEEDS OF THE SALE OF THE STATION WILL BE PAID TO UNIVISION OR ITS DESIGNEE.

Someone could put a new group of (at least) three FMs with the Univision KIOT spinoff, the Citadel KBZU spinoff - and whatever Clear Channel might be forced to divest.

That's what I was thinking, too. In fact, they'd have the potential for a solid cluster with just KIOT and KBZU, though I have to think they'd have to toast that underperforming talk format on 96.3. Granted, it would be a little tough to compete with just two stations, but KIOT is solid, and Clear Channel and Citadel will be forced to play by the same rules as everyone else, which means no more 5 FM clusters.

Keep in mind..Univision can pull KIOT out of trust at any time and put in say..
KQBT..or any other station.
