Univision Second Most-Watched Network 18-34

Source:
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/07/0...in-overall-prime-among-all-adults-18-34/21812

The article states that the Spanish language network is "the #2 network in the country in overall prime among all Adults 18-34, beating ABC, CBS, NBC, and CW." The article does not say which was No. 1 (Fox?). And furthermore, the article also says that "Univision out-delivered ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX every night last week among Adults 18-34". So if it's not Fox that's No. 1, who is it? ION? MY TV?

Number one, it was an off week for most of the major networks while Univision had fresh programming. Secondly, UNI garners a large majority of the Spanish-speaking audience in prime time - they demolish Telemundo and the little players (Azteca, etc.) by a large margin. Take into account that a lot of the 18-34 non-hispanic audience was watching cable pretty heavily last week and was thus split fifty ways, Univision probably did place 2nd. The Hispanic audience skews young and UNI cleans up with them.

It's like an election where you have Hugo Chavez running against five opposition party guys. Chavez has his loyal core, the others just split the majority. Actually, that IS how he got elected. And it's how Univision came in second in the 18-34s. Wait until they come in first sometime - but it will only EVER be in 18-34s. For a number of demographic reasons.

Now, if only they'd do something about the crappy audio/video quality coming out of their local O & O stations. No HD and the only channel in my market that often breaks up into digital sweat on our cable system. They make money and must be loth to part with it.

True that Univision skews young but it would be interesting to know how many NON-Hispanics who do watch Univision and the others on a regular basis? After all a lot of non-hispanics ( aand a good many of them are under 30 ) are now speaking spanish alongside english and on top of that one of the top tunes in America right now that is getting a TON of airplay on CHR/TOP 40, dance music, and hispanic stations is Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me", a song that is sung part in english, the other part in spanish.

I do not have Univision in my area, but from what I understand lots of their programming features plenty of hot young babes, which will always have an appeal to this demographic, and from what I've heard has brought in a wave of non-Spanish speaking viewers.

Wow Freddy, where do you live? Few areas are without Univision these days.

Yes, a lot of the programming features hot babes who are dressed to the 9s and who look excellent! It's true of Telemundo too, by the way. Honestly, better looking than what you see on the other channels. Supposedly, most are from Mexico - but few look like most of the Mexicans I have met! There are plenty of Venezuelan and Colombian women featured as well and you actually DO see lots of lovely ladies like that when you travel to those places.

Interestingly, they're not featured as "slutty" but rather dressed very attractively. They take a great deal of pride in appearance and it pays off. No self-respecting woman in Latin America leaves the house without looking her best. You see, the Latino culture is still more chauvinistic than ours is. Thank God!

Yeah, it doesn't hurt their ratings when it comes to men watching and I know quite a few guys who don't speak a word of Spanish who stop by Univision now and then. However, I doubt that it's significant when it comes to ratings as they don't tend to watch an entire show. Channel surfing doesn't count.

remember the song "Mexican Radio" by Wall Of Voodoo? gotta admit, i like the song better than i like mexican radio or TV.

Here in Connecticut, we have WUVN-DT (digital) channel 46 of Hartford. In a prior life, they were the very troubled WHCT-TV channel 18 (analog) who used to be informerical hell and was once owned by the late Doctor Gene Scott. They were also off the air from April 1991 to about 1997.

As for what kind of ratings they get? Good question! I do know this much: they carry Telefutura on WUVN-DT 46-3. (Telefutura also aired on low-power channel 47 analog of Hartford.) There's also something called LATV which airs on 46-4.

For many years, Hartford was home to W13BF, low-power channel 13. They were a primary Telemundo affiliate and occasionally carried programming from the Italian RAI network with some Polish programming on weekends. Today, they are WRDM-LP channel 50 analog, with satellite station WDMR-LP in Springfield, MA. It was on channel 65 but I don't know what they're using now.

Today, Comcast in New Britain and Hartford, both of whom have sizable Hispanic populations, carries WUVN-DT (UNI) on cable 18 and WRDM-LP (TEL) on cable 13. WRDM-LP on channel 13 goes back at least 20 some years since the W13BF channel 13 days.

A lot of UNI's success that week could be attributed to the FIFA tourney.

Absolutely correct!! Thank you for pointing that out. They crushed the rest of the Spanish networks and even got a few English speaking viewers with those games.

I can't believe that I forgot that - as I actually watched some "futbol" on UNI that week too.

Needless to say, I live in an area of the country that is so economically depressed, new migrants to not find it attractive to come here
