Univision to add 2 (or 3?) new channels

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703385404576259230963231692.html

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Univision is planning 2 and maybe 3 new channels:
* UniNovelas (initial name), which will show Spanish-language soap operas; possibly as early as the 3rd quarter of this year
* Univision Deportes, all-sports channel mostly airing Mexican league soccer but there is interest in airing other sports; coming in the first half of 2012
* Univision 24-7, a possible all-news channel

Univision is in talks with cable and satellite providers but no definite agreements yet.

I'm not surprised to see they're planning a wall-to-wall novela network. Univision is the most inane and dumb Hispanic network. Seeing the kind of programming they pull for Latinos makes the TV networks of other parts of Latin America look better than the BBC. They treat their audience like illiterate monkeys who only watch soap operas and football. Not counting the fact they assume all of their audience are Mexican immigrants.

Why we can't get a direct feed from XEW-TV Canal de las Estrellas from Mexico? Canada has it. Spain has it. The rest of Latin America has it. Instead of stupid network of Univision.

Because of the long and sordid history of Telemundo vs. Univision. You can find pages and pages about it, but to put it shortly; Univision almost has full exclusivity of Televisa's programming and they can do whatever they want with it until 2020. Thus anything XEW has to go on Univision and UniNovelas and because of foreign ownership quagmires, Televisa cannot launch XEW America without an American partner.

Galavision is pretty much the same thing. They show most of the same feed that Canal de las Estrellas does.

I recall being in Costa Rica and the timer on the TV would always turn on channel 2 (XEW) waking me up to the theme music from el Chavo. It was like waking to a nightmare on a daily basis! :D

Apparently, I take it there was no way to disable the timer, or at least, set it on a more-pleaseant channel.

No, this particular set always defaulted to channel 2 and you couldn't change it. It went on at 5:56, just as the closing credits to Chavo and music were starting - every single day. Then the morning news from Televisa would be on, starring *Adela* who is a legend in her own mind.

Galavision has all the same offerings.

Carry more channels= start charging more carriage fees from cable/satellite providers.
There's a big chance that they're just going to rehash the novelas that they play on primetime on Univision and Telefutura for UniNovelas.
UniDeportes seems like a fair idea. Especially when Fox Sports en Espanol focuses more on Spanish and European league soccer and ESPN Deportes on MLS and sports news/talk.
UniNoticas actually seems like a good idea because they have great news coverage, better than most US networks IMO.

Too bad you didn't complain to the manager about it. Or unplug the set. If I had a TV that would turn on by itself, that's what I would do.

While Univision 24/7 is a logical extension of the Univision brand, is it really needed if the U.S. already has CNN en Espanol? (And internationally, there's ECO from Mexico and a TV Espana 24 hour news channel.)

Maybe Cuba should launch an international Television Reloj newschannel as well. The anchor reads 55 second stories as we hear a clock tick off every second. Then when each minute concludes, we hear an audio Morse code and the anchor tells us the time, followed by "Esta es Television Reloj."

Ha...they wouldn't be able to have that "RR" in Morse Code....it'd be whatever "TR" would be in Morse Code.

My Spanish is poor, very limited. Has UNI or TEL ever considered an "SAP" with English dubbing? I've yet to see a Spanish TV station/network try this. They wanna branch out, don't they? Step 1.

Some Telemundo stations do run certain programs with English captions on CC3 or other CC channels. At least they did when it was analog.

I do wonder how many Spanish language stations an area can support. In Chicago about 12% of the population speaks Spanish (some also speak English) and they have three full time Spanish stations already.

Here are the top markets in terms of Hispanic viewers according to Nielsen (markets having more than 100,000 Hispanic households

01) Los Angeles
02) New York
03) Miami
04) Houston
05) Dallas - Fort Worth
06) Chicago
---All Markets above this point have at least 500,000 Hispanic households (NY and LA are the only markets with more than a million Hispanic households

07) San Antonio
09) San Francisco - San Jose - Oakland
10) Harlingen - Brownsville - McAllen
11) Sacramento
12) Albuquerque
13) San Diego
14) Fresno
15) Denver
16) El Paso
17) Orlando
18) Philadelphia
---All markets from 6-18 have between 200,000 an 499,999 Hispanic households

19) Tampa - St Petersburg
20) Washington DC
21) Atlanta
22) Austin
23) Las Vegas
24) Boston
25) Tucson
26) Corpus Christi
27) Seattle - Tacoma

Markets 19 - 27 have between 100,000 and 199,999 Hispanic households

OK, I sit corrected then, in the sense of CC text....but has SAP been tried?

What they really need to do is work on the audio quality of Radio Reloj - at least on the web stream. Way overmodulated, sounds like garbage.

Radio Reloj. (BEEP!) Diez y Siete minutos. . _ . . _ .

As to the above post, Univision has also been providing closed captions in English for some programming. You'll know when the talent lets you know in English. Trouble is, if you have a legacy analog set you're likely out of luck. For technical reasons the second-language follow-along can't be placed on CC2. But as far as SAP audio is concerned, it's probably not a priority because of the costs involved.

I have heard Radio Reloj on FM when I have been in the Florida Keys....not a bad sound. It is in mono.
