Unknown DX on 106.9 just now in Vermilion, OH

Around 1:15pm EDT in Vermilion, OH I was briefly getting a station on 106.9 playing the popular song "Blow My Whistle Baby" with a scratchy but somewhat listenable signal. I checked WKZA's website and they don't show them having played that song and I don't think it was CIXX from London, ON because I checked the reception of CBCL 93.5 and CFPL 95.9 and neither of them were even noticable. Any ideas on which 106.9 I could have been getting?

Unless WRQK was running off format, this looks like either really long tropo or E-skip. The closest top-40 on 106.9 to Vermilion, OH is in Milwaukee, WI

CIXX London played "Whitsle" today at 1:16pm per their website. Very likely them you heard.

Lake Erie certainly helps in your location. Although it is weird that no other London's were in at this time, especially granted that CIXX is only a 3kw station.

Have you heard WSAE- Spring Arbor, MI from Vermilion?

I haven't ever positively IDed WSAE from here. The only 106.9s I have IDed so far are:

WRQK - Canton, OH
WXXC - Marion, IN (I've also heard this station all the way to the IN/IL border on I-80)
CIXX - London, ON
WRMN - Marion, OH (before they vacated the frequency and moved down the dial to 94.3)

I'll listen and try for WSAE and yeah that's strange that I may have gotten CIXX earlier today but no signs of CBCL nor CFPL.

Buckeyes, I checked this site shortly after your post today and it showed tropo in the yellow 250km range over your area at the time.

That is a good catch.

At least you guys have had some tropo this season. Here on the Gulf coast where it's supposed to be prime season now for good long distance FM reception, it has been a total dud.

And at the same time I noticed the tropo over your area today, the map showed a huge long red swath of a path from southern California to eastern Kansas.

Early rare E skip?

WXXC has a very good signal. I once carried it from Indy to north of Fort Wayne and likely would have gotten it further north if not for WSAE. I've also carried it to around La Paz along US-31.

WXXC knocks out WSAE no problem even in Coldwater at times. I actually heard something (couldn't ID it) knocking on WSAE's door as close as Jonesville on US-12 before. They ain't joking about WXXC being 'cross country'!

Speaking of WSAE, if you ever try for them in Vermilion, OH (provided they don't get swallowed up by the almighty WXXC) they are called 'Home.FM' with a mix of Adult Alternative, Adult Contemporary and Christian music.
