Unlicensed Stations

I have tuned around the dial in random places and have discovered some unlicensed stations! Some of these sound terrible, while others sound great! Lets have feedback in case anyone has heard any of these!WRSJ 105.5 Radio St. Johns.....Can be heard around west islip and bayshore! Their programming is mostly dead air, but they play everything! Their audio processing is poor, and the volume is very low! They are on after school, around 2-5pmWRAM 89.3 Ram Radio.....Best heard in farmingdale and melville. They run out from SUNY Farmingdale and are formerly known as WFNY, until 92.3 took the call letters. They are dead air for the summer, but offer hip hop, rap, and repetetive jingles and public service announcments! Their signal is overmodulated and has a hum. WMIR 100.9 Middle Island Radio....This station is impressive, with music variety and awsome jingles, decent coverage, but has poor audio quality. If you are in Middle Island, Ridge, or anywhere around there, give this guy a listen to. He operates during the day!WIRO 89.7 West Islip Rocks On! This station plays rock music, has jingles, and some funny programming! Audio quality is impressive. Best heard in West Islip and Babylon. They only go on certain nights.??? 89.3......Bayshore/Brightwaters.....This station plays oldies, and has a mono signal......the signal is overmodulated.??? 89.7 Spanish Music, can be heard for miles, usually around brentwood to farmingdale!If anyone know of others, post em!!!! ;D

Middle Island Radio probably plays better rock music than most of the rock stations on LI (and NYC for that matter)

Yes, i like Middle Island Radio, and WIRO, they seem to play rare titles like Iron Butterfly for example.

Nothing for nothing guys,but if these stations are unlicensed and you enjoy listening to them,then maybe posting them on the message boards isn't exactly a great idea.You wouldn't want the wrong person to read them.(if you get my drift)

Too many pirates, not enough field agents. It's amazing how easy it is to get a TX today.

Unless the unlicensed operator is malicious, they'll probably be left alone.

If it's true that if an unlicensed station is not being malicious or causing interference to others they MIGHT be left alone,then that's a good thing.I heard an LPFM station broadcast dead air 24/7 for 2 months.And sometimes they were completely off the air for weeks.
I know that it isn't fair to some LPFM stations,like Scotty Hart (radio X) that layed-out $10,000 for each of his 3 frequencies plus equipment,antennas etc...,but a lot of the parameters for aquiring an LPFM is just beyond reach for a lot of potential broadcasters.
With large corps.owning most of the commercial stations,and the bottom line is making a buck,there are no more mom & pop stations with the creativity that used to be in radio.Some of these unlicensed stations provide that.
I know the law is the law, but I see a lot of local communities benefiting from these stations.There must be some kind of happy medium.

How much? I hate to say it, but your estimate of 10K/station is way too low.

Point taken on the need for more community stations though.

Most people i know would prefer a community station as opposed to large commercial stations! In fact, i actually hear public service announcements on some unlicensed stations that serve their respected areas! So maybe they are trying to make a stand to serve more of a purpose than to broadcast illegally!

Thats exactly one of my points.In fact,back in '85 there was a station I knew that used high school kids like an internship at the station and it wound up that instead of hanging out at the 7-11,they were hanging out at the radio station being productive and learning about radio.Even some of their parents were involved.The only problem was that the school itself couldn't get involved OFFICIALLY,due to the station being illegal.They even tried for an educational license with a very impressive petition,to no avail.
But a guess,illegal is illegal.

$10k just about buys a piece of office furniture. The chair that the MTV-N (North American Feed) operator at the MTV Net Uplink in Happauge uses costs $800. But damn, it sure is comfortable.
