Unofficial poll: Best ATL radio stations

Forget about ratings and your own personal preferences (ok, don't do that, but just be open minded here), but which of the myriad of choices do you think are the best stations top to bottom in this market and why? The criteria is up to you.

Mine, very much off the top of my head:

1. WSB-750 AM - the king, i suppose. not always my cup of tea but a pretty well run station that seems to have it together.
2. WQXI-790 AM - probably a surprise for most, but: a station that understands that radio is a BUSINESS (i.e. everything is for sale) and despite Jeffereson Pilot, an almost true "indie" radio station, something that just does not exist anymore.
3. WKLS 96.1 FM - I'm honestly not much of a listener anymore but 96 Rock is/has and will be a monster in this market FOREVER. Also, one of the best sounding FM stations that I have ever heard anywhere.
4. WRAS 88.5 FM - should probably go semi-commercial, push an internet feed and break ties with GSU ala KEXP in Seattle but a 100,000 college stick that does its damn thing and does it well.
5. WVEE 103.3 FM - I probably dont spend an hour a year listening to V but their performance over the past 20+ years gives reason to pause. And in a market where they were once the only game in town to one where every other staion is doing some variation of the "urban" thing.<P ID="signature">______________

1. 1690-Air Atlanta-not bad sounding for a new station, the only talk station I'll ever listen to.

2. 94.1-WSTR-FM-Celebrating sweet 16 this November, Star94 may never have been straight up CHR, but it ran Power 99 out of its game and forced 95.5:The Beat rhythmic. Keep up the good work. Puke 100, your days are numbered.

3. 94.9-WLTM-FM-By far the biggest playlist of them all, Lite-FM filled the oldies void really well while still keeping it soft rock. This is my new favorite radio station, because it's the only station that plays my favorite song "Laughter In The Rain" by Neil Sedaka. Go 94.9!!

4. 104.1-WALR-FM-I'm digging the processing used on Kiss 104, plus they not only play old school R&B, but they dig for some of this decade's cuts too (i.e "He Is"-Heather Headley). Plus the Tom Joyner morning show's my favorite.

5. 105.3-WBZY-FM-The Buzz has always ruled. What a great alternative to 99SUX; this is the closest thing to Active Rock I've ever heard in Atlanta. It's truly a blessing to hear System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, and bands like that on the radio again.

1. WAFS-1190: Good praise and worship music. Too bad it's only on the air between sunup and sundown.

2. WMVV-90.7: Like that station, too.

3. WWEV-91.5: Gotta love that "Rock Solid, Victory 91.5"!

4. WCNN-680 The Fan: This station is at its best when comes to play-by-play of the biggest events, like the NCAA basketball tournament, NBA Finals, World Series, etc.

5. WJGA-92.1 Jackson: No, it's not technically an Atlanta station in the truest sense, but the station does get into Henry County well, as well as parts of Newton and Rockdale Counties. The station plays soft rock during the day, R&B music at night, and special programming geared towards the African-American community on weekends.

"Puke" 100 made the Beat go rhythmic, IMO. Otherwise, I think the Beat would've stayed mainstream a little while longer.

Sounds like someone holds a grudge against the people at Susquehanna. Probably fired.

Also, Q got their best trend ever last month. They beat Star 18-34/Nights. And X is showing strength against Dave (fell off the radar), Rock (still too early to tell with Reg Guys, and Buzz (still to early).

That's correct. For its first year, The Beat was a mainstream CHR with a rhythmic edge. When Q100 signed on, The Beat went Rhythmic.

Is that your impression or are there #s to back it up? I was wondering how long this format would hold an audience.
 
How come nobody ever mentions WATB 1420 Decatur? Yes I know, technically it's not an Atlanta station per se, but them dudes ROCK!

WSB in a landslide.

I say that though being critical of the fact that they provide almost zero in the way of local Atlanta radio.

Yup. X is #2 18-34.

I don't think that this really the best example since DaveFm isn't an 18-34 station. Also, I haven't seen a book in a long time where 99X is number 2 18-34. Are you talking monthlies or trends? Unless it is a book, it isn't worth quoting IMHO.

I agree, however, that it does appear DaveFM has hit the wall, but they are still beating 99X 12+ and 25-54 (Dave's target).

Its a trend true...but its also a third of the book. Sorta like saying a mid-term shouldn't be mentioned when talking about how you're doing in school...it does matter.

Yeah, the novelty of Dave has worn off. But 12+ matters not.

I have looked at the recent trends and 99X isn't number 2 18-34. At best they are #3 in phase 2 of the Spring book. This is a suspicious looking spike in only one trend from the 5th or 6th place they've been the past year. Where do you find them #2?

I've got to put my top 5 as-

1. WSB-AM: News, traffic, and weather coverage is great, love Hannity & Boortz. THough, I don't get why they air Savage- he is hideous.

2. 104.7 The Fish: Good talent, very good playlist.

3. 94.9 Lite-FM: Since the demise of Cool 105.7, they have expanded their playlist. I have been impressed- especially for a CC station.

4. WKEU 89.9 The Rock (Griffin): They use oldies satellite radio, play a wide variety of oldies. Still get my oldies fix with them.

5. 790 the Zone: have to give them the edge in the sports radio game. Better talent. Chris Dimino does a fantastic job with Budweiser Hardball. Just a shame their signal isn't stronger.<P ID="signature">______________
