I've only been listening to select frequencies out of the northeast here in Tampa tonight because one of my latest listening goals is to maybe hear 610 WIP from Philadelphia, though it seems it will be unlikely. It's a long shot. I once heard WIOD over WIP up in Bethlehem, Pa so I figure maybe the opposite can happen too. WIP's signal doesn't necessarily favor this direction but we're not in a real null either and, as we know, many stations have been heard when their signal pattern suggests it's unlikely or impossible.
So I'm listening to the big New York frequencies 660, 770, and 880 to get an idea of how good the signals are from that general direction. Something very interesting is happening. The conditions seem to be rapidly changing like I don't recall hearing in a long time or if ever.
For a while, WFAN was completely dominating the frequency on 660 with a real good signal. WORL (from the Orlando area) was faint in the background and the Cuban which ususlly rules the frequency was nowhere to be heard. Less than 5 minutes later, WORL was overpowering the frequency with a great signal and then it soon went back to WFAN. On a typical night, the Cuban is dominant with WORL pretty good and even listenable in the background and WFAN is faint at best behind that.
WABC had a much better than usual signal tonight and it was steady too.
Then I went to 880 and what I thought was WCBS at first was WZAB from the Miami area with a good strong signal ruling the frequency. WCBS and the Cuban were way in the background. Minutes later, WZAB was completely gone and it was the usual pretty good signal of WCBS with the Cuban in the background but still strong. The only time WZAB typically rules 880 is around dusk, so I was surprised at hearing it so well tonight.
Then listening on 610 in hopes of possibly hearing WIP, I usually hear WIOD fading in and out with some Cuban? in the background which often takes over the frequency too. So all of the sudden on 610, this religious station comes in and takes over the frequency. I've never heard them before. Turns out it's a 1 kw station from Birmingham, Alabama. It was soon gone again completely.
