Unusual FM Opening in Port aux Basques (June 3, 2012)

Some strange outside stations entered my Sony Walkman tonight here in Port aux Basques. Examples...

102.5 - WTSS - Star 102.5 Buffalo, NY
103.1 - WILK - Scranton, PA
104.1 - WNNK - Wink 104 Harrisburg, PA
105.3 - WFRB - Frostburg, MD

There were too many coming in the 100s at once that I was able to hear a single station for a long period. Got those in my house.

And this started pretty much as I was heading down my usual walking path and about to resume picking up 101.9 The Giant Sydney like I usually do, and then the FM band opened up in the 100s like crazy!

One more thing before I call it quits: I heard something on 98.5 or 98.7 but faded out as I was about to get an ID. Was playing some popular music but don't know where.

There's 50MHz ham radio skip being reported between New England and Europe -- you might take a careful listen for something that may be broadcasting in neither English nor French!

I didn't get anything on FM here, maybe I missed it but I just had a bunch of VHF-L TV audio on my Tecsun PL-390. I had a station coming in on channel 4 that mentioned NTV, Newfoundland and Labrador and an ad from OZ-FM. There may have also been an opening west towards Ontario going on around the same time according to the MUF maps. Later on channel 4 I had audio from the Cleveland Show, likely from Global. Also had some show talking about gasoline and green energy on channels 3 and 5 at the same time.

I echo W9WI.....I hope to be hearing from someone in Portugal.....long multi-hop E-skip to the far northeast US/maritime Canada has been going on. I tried for audio on 53.75 (Portugal chE2) but nothing here.

There are two NTV transmitters on channel 4, one at Stephenville (8.3kw) and one at Grand Falls. (100kw)

I think that the only Global on ch 4 is Owen Sound. I've caught it, especially when CTV on 2 (Wiarton) comes up. However the Global on 2 (Bancroft) has become my pest-and-a-half since analog in the US shut off!!

NTV carries a lot of Global programming. Their schedule lists "Simpsons/Cleveland" from 9:30-10:30 Newfoundland Time on Sundays. That's 7:00 Central. (and seems to be the same time as it airs on Owen Sound) www.ntv.ca.

Besides Owen Sound, there are two other Global stations on channel 4: Saskatoon & Kamloops. Since "spunker" is obviously far enough east to log Newfoundland, I'd suggest he's too far east for either of these to be likely targets. (Kamloops is only about 4kw anyway. There are probably a few more Globals on 4 in BC but they're all less than 50 watts.)

I suspect channels 3 and 5 were CBC -- there are plenty of each on The Rock -- their detailed schedule for last night crashes my Flash player.

Newfoundlandtime, you had an E-skip opening to the WSW. There was a LOT of NFLD/NS Es logged last night in the northeastern states.
