Hartwick Screw'ged By WBEN

It also explains why Hardwick's show was "on hiatus" for the last couple of weeks. I thought that the timing of the holidays, or Hardwick's school break might be responsible. Little did we know that it was "Tiny Tim" playing "Scrooge". Ho-ho-ho...
The story in question can be found on the
Buffalo News site.
WBEN's actions are just one of the many things about the station that elicit the occasional "wrath of the board." Certainly, a station has a right to conduct its programming as it sees fit. But please don't try to ------- the listeners, readers or the posters here, as Tim Wenger attempted to explain away his decision.
Balderdash!
Who would be surprised if Beach and Baurle discussed their (hurt) feelings about Kevin Hardwick's guests, known to Wenger. Beach and Bauerle are articulate, accomplished talk show hosts who can deliver a powerful punch when they control the phones and their own guests. Wenger's decision and his vapid explanation make them appear to have glass jaws. In a way, it eviscerates them in the face of criticism. In effect, Wenger's statement says, "Sandy and Tom are superstars who have to be protected and coddled."
We wouldn't want them drawing their weapons!
With rare exception, WBEN, Beach and Bauerle are much like most other national talk show hosts. Ever try to get into Sean Hannity's show? There's an absolute firewall in the screening process that allows only the most ardent sycophants to get on the air with him.
The one exception i found was when Hannity tried to go toe-to-toe with former NY governor Mario Cuomo, who was his invited guest. Hannity must have felt that he could go toe-to-toe with one of the finest orators and political minds in the country. It was an embarrassment. Hannity appeared like the school bully who picked a school-yard fight against the normal looking kid who just happened to have a black belt in judo.
WBEN is a powerful radio station, moreso because it has no commercial competition. Frankly, the only place it is held to account is on these boards and in the blogosphere.
WBFO and WNED-AM should make Kevin Hardwick an offer. He's objective, well-spoken and knowledgeable, and he'd fit in nicely at WNED-AM, which would especially benefit during fund-raising as well, since Hardwick gets a lot of TV face time from his Sunday show. (This, by the way, happens because [1] Hardwick's guests are good and [2] Buffalo TV stations are starving for news on the weekend.) One more thing, if you're a competitive PD, there's some small delight to be had in sticking it to your competition, especially if you can make your station better at the same time.
Shame on Wenger. Shame on WBEN.
But honestly... did you expect anything else from him and WBEN?
