There are a few radio-related events coming up that you may want to include on your schedule:
Tuesday, June 10
The San Francisco Museum & Historical Society will present the next installment in its series on the golden age of entertainment in the city with a roundtable discussion featuring Jim Lange, Frank Dill, Mike Cleary, Al Hart and Aaron Edwards. It will be a lively evening of memories of radio from the 1950s to the present -- looking at radio as it was then and how it changed over the years.
I have a small role in the presentation: the radio museum is supplying images and audio to accompany the program.
The program will be held in the 500-seat Kanban Theater at the magnificent Jewish Community Center, 3200 California St. at Presidio, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (A pre-show reception begins in the JCC atrium at 7 p.m.) Admission is free to SFMHS members, $5 for non-members.
Thursday, June 19
Broadcast Legends is celebrating women in broadcasting with a special lunchtime program featuring a look back at the significant accomplishments of female broadcasters over the years.
It's also an opportunity to meet, mingle and network with some of the best and brightest women in local radio and television. Rosie Allen of KGO Radio will moderate a discussion of how women's roles in broadcasting have evolved over the last several decades, and several "surprises" are also being planned.
The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Doubletree Inn on the Berkeley Marina (foot of University Avenue) and runs until about 2 p.m. My advice: arrive early (11 - 11:15) to hobnob with the celebrity guests in the lobby.
The event is open to the public, but reservations are required. For more information, visit http://www.broadcastlegends.com/meeting.html
Saturday, July 5
Considering the price of gas these days, why not stay close to home on the 4th of July weekend and venture over to Berkeley for the California Historical Radio Society's annual "Radio Day by the Bay" -- live at KRE.
There'll be a variety of presentations, displays of great classic radios and broadcasting equipment, music, tours of the restored KRE studio building, and (tentatively scheduled) "live broadcasts" by Carter B. Smith and The Wolfman from the station's studio.
Several local radio stations and radio personalities are also expected to be present at the event.
The event begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, and will run well into the afternoon. More details at http://www.kremuseum.org
