Update: Air America May Lose WLIB

Both the Post and the Daily News picked up the story today. The Post's John Mainelli raises a possibility not already mentioned: Radio One's recently launched Urban Talk network. Their line up includes the Rev Al Sharpton in the noon to 3pm slot. Sharpton currently does a one hour Sunday morning program from Inner City broadcasting which Air America carries on WLIB as part of their contract.

POST: AIR AMERICA TUNED OUT?

By JOHN MAINELLI
March 7, 2006 -- AIR America is close to losing its New York flagship station - knocking Al Franken and his liberal colleagues off the air on their second anniversary.

The network has a two-year lease with WLIB (AM 1190) that is reportedly set to expire April 1 - and at least one reliable report says it is "extremely likely" the deal will not be renewed.

Losing its New York outlet would be a serious blow to the fledgling liberal radio network. "Radio Equalizer" blogger Brian Maloney - who blew the whistle on questionable loans to the lefty network last year - published the first report that WLIB was on the verge of evicting Air America some time soon.

Air America's options for a new home are not promising. All of the city's other strong-signal stations are spoken for, leaving only weak-signal "fringe" stations that do not cover the entire city and suburbs.

Air America parent Piquant LLC has reportedly been paying Inner City Broadcasting - controlled by former Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton and his son, Pierre - $2.5 million a year to air Franken and others.

An Air America spokeswoman told The Post, "It's business as usual," and declined further comment.

Air America got unwanted headlines last year when it was learned that previous management had received what investigators called an "inappropriate" $875,000 loan - since repaid - from a Bronx charity.

Calls to Inner City execs were not returned.

The leading contenders to take over the WLIB lease are former Clear Channel exec Randy Michaels, who syndicates competing lefty talker Ed Schultz, and the new Radio One black-focused talk network that includes Rev. Al Sharpton.

AIR TIME: The progressive network Air America, heard locally on WLIB (1190 AM), is seeking to deflect reports that WLIB may change formats when its Air America agreement expires at the end of this month.

"It is business as usual at Air America Radio," said a statement late yesterday. "We will not, nor have we ever discussed, our confidential negotiations with third party companies, investors or others in a public forum. We have no plans of leaving the New York City airwaves and plan to be on in New York for many years to come."

Wasn't that the one complaint that people had with this experiment. The talkers on Air America didn't match the station that it was taking over which was African-American and Caribbean.(They did have to hire one of WLIB's anchors for the morning show.) I could easily see the Radio One channel on. On the other hand I could see them sell out to another mostly White station.

WLIB

Consider the sources, boys & girls. I'd place this in the "wishful thinking" category.

What's the wishful thinking here?

That WLIB could be an independent Libtalker with the addition of Ed Schultz and maybe Stephanie Miller and a real local morning show?

That WLIB could become an urban talk station with the Rev Al Sharpton and Radio One's line-up plus local shows?

What source should be considered? Hinkley or Mainelli, both outstanding radio columnists? Or the trade sites running similar stories?

One has to ask who is being "wishful" here? You seem to be making the same mistake Maloney is. You both act like a business setback for Paradigm/Air America means the end of Libtalk as we know it, have some political significance and mean a clear victory for Maloney's buddy O'Reilly. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Air America is the IBM of Libtalk. Through the 80's and early 90's many people called systems in the Wintel universe "IBMs" or "PCs" or "PC compatible" long after IBM ceased to be a dominant or major player in that market. Real Media once dominated Internet audio, too. But after Rob Glaser lost his position in the market to WMP and MP3, he moved on to ... you guessed it ... Air America. Point is, Real Media is not what it was but Internet audio is stronger and bigger than ever.

Tired of ....

For those of you that want to see a voice die in this country: you will gain nothing but your own slavery. Once your neighbors mouth is shut, yours is next.

For those of you who think Bush is conservative: you are wrong.

The conservative movement is based on smaller, more efficient government. NOT LARGER, LESS EFFICIENT. Wake up folks. Rush is wrong! If you want to be conservative, Read: Adam Smith, Ayn Rand, Winston Churchill.

Boks from Coulter, O'Reilly is the conserative edition of Britney Spears music. All candy.

WOW talk about a rant. Skyeye was saying (if you read) that even if AAR goes away that is not the end of liberal talk. And from what I have read Skyeye leans more liberal than conservative.

No one is suggesting that we silence anyone. Shill out.

If AAR can make it in the business world then they will thrive. If they cant make it, no one has silenced the network but themselves.

Yes, you are right. The note was for those that are just giddy about other people's failures. But, yes the market must always make the ultimate decision as to what does or does not prosper.

Rush has never advocated larger government, whether efficient or not. He's been criticizing that aspect of the president's "conservatism" for five years now. I understand criticizing Rush, but at least try to get his position right before you criticize him.

Heh. Actually, since we're talking Radio here, "shill" was both correct and appropriate.
