This is a pretty cold thread. I know the intent is humor. It reminds me of the christian fundamentalists saying AIDS was god's punishment for being homosexual.

Dementia? Surely you jest. I heard his talkshow the Monday after the Rapture and he sounded perfectly clear to me. Many, if not most people have blind spots in their thinking. For instance, there are perfectly rational people who think that bottled water is better than tap water. It happens that Harold Camping's blind side is belief in the Bible. That's all.
I always found his religious stations pretty unobjectionable, they just preached the gospel and read from the Bible, it never seemed like they were pushing some sick political trip like KBRT or the Salem stations do. This sudden The World Is Ending thing came as a bit of a surprise. What will happen to the chain when Mr. Camping does go to be with Our Lord?

Well, it's been said that he has had to bail out Family Radio with his personal money from time to time, so maybe Family isn't all that solvent. In that case I'd imagine they'd scale down and pay off debts by selling the powerhouse outlets they have. I think there are 3 people on the board, so there is some continuance.

Yet only a very few would say they follow Camping's extra-biblical and convoluted numerology theories.
Harold Camping is a true radio pioneer, notwithstanding his unorthodox Christian teachings disseminated through this medium. For that we can celebrate and acknowledge his contributions. Camping was among only a handful of broadcasters willing to take a risk back in the 1950's on a new spectrum called FM. It is regrettable to see an elder person struggle with debilitating effects of stroke. Hopefully he can recover somewhat and take hold of an opportunity to enjoy whatever days he might have left in rest and retirement.

Whether or not David has any "bitterness" toward "the church," (whatever monolithic power "the church" may be), I can't say, but I didn't find any bitterness in his post.

I have never listened to any of Camping's stations - not even once - but having now seen him interviewed on TV a few times now, I can understand how some people would find him compelling.

They were successful at times with religious broadcasting, but didn't seem to sustain it. They established KSAN Radio , KSAN tv, and KICU tv (channel 43, not 36), and they also held KBIF and KGDP radio (both with full time religious programming). Some of those stations were given secular formats at least to some extent, but none of the stations seemed to last in the long term.

KRJY in Sacramento also failed. Like anything else, it's a business. K-love is almost assuredly quite profitable, simply because their per-station operating costs are virtually nothing. They buy a frequency, immediately file for a main studio waiver, and program it as a satellite translator. Camping does something similar, although they maintain operational studios in lots of markets across the US. Family Radio also concentrates on the larger markets and generally has bigger sticks. The sale of just one of their stations in a large market could probably fund the operation for at least a couple of years.
In many ways the religious operations are just like the secular ones.

I'm not a religious person, though I nearly entered the seminary (2 weeks away) when I was in high school. However, as time goes on I see that religion does play a part in giving some people pleasure and comfort. Is this worth anything?
