UPDATE: KTLA Bloodbath: It's On!

Walter, Willa and Bill are true veterans at KTLA...I think they've got over a decade each in that shambles of a newsroom.

If there's a youth movement on at KTLA (read: cheaper bodies), they've got a long uphill battle in front of them to be what Frank Buckley wants them to be: the leader in breaking news coverage.

The old grey KTLA just ain't what she used to be.

What would Hal Fishman think if he was still with us?

Without a doubt, he'd be appalled. This was once one of the best newsrooms in the city. Now, it appears that it will be a training ground for the inexperienced.

Then again, KTLA was stronger in its iteration as a superstation and started the downhill slide upon joining up with 'the WB' and sank below sea level as "CW 5."

Looks like Tribune pink slipped Janet Choi as well. So it wasn't just older ones who were given the ax.

Admittedly, Willa was looking a little tired on camera (although not as bad as Marta Waller who looks embalmed and ready for viewing thanks to HDTV). But Willa was the best field reporter KTLA had--great stand ups, willing to do the tough remotes and did them with wonderful concentration and coolness.

Why couldn't they deep six Ross King? Talk about a superfluous body. He gets my vote for "Most Annoying Scotsman on L.A. TV" (sort of narrows the field, doesn't it?)

Bill Smith & Will Sandmeyer both former KNJO Radio alumni; Willa did news & Bill had a morning show, to bad KNJO's replacement Jill FM is jock less as Bill Smith was great at morning radio.

The observation of Willa on HDTV brings to mind what I have noticed. Upon my initial viewing of HDTV the thing that really jumps out of the screen are facial blemishes, wrinkles etc. Maybe a new advanced form of make up should be developed to cover these flaws. At times even the make up itself seems to be bloched on and poorly applied.

Thanks JB. That explains it all. I was wondering why most of the female weather persons or traffic reporters seem to "POP" out at you. Remember the old Heast newspapers -- the sports section always had two or three "pin-up" pictures -. The local newspapers just have ads for every "strip" joint - now days. One of these days -- they will just post a "976" phone number on their chest !! Don't get me wrong. I love a big breasted woman. But the TV stations are pushing it a tad to far. --- Either you have IT -- or you don't get the job.

Thanks to HDTV, the days of just applying powder are over.

These desk anchors are using industrial strength airbrushing and liquid makeup to hide blemishes and smooth out the complexion. Of course, this technique clogs pores, which means more blemishes, which means thicker makeup application, which means...

Even babe-alicous Sharon Tay is showing some blotchiness. Poor dear. I guess you can't stay 25 forever.

I also notice that the camera framing seems to be looser, not quite as tight in on the anchors. That, coupled with larger graphics, will, hopefully, lessen the noticeability of any facial defects. They probably had that written into their contracts. :)

But no doubt about it, HDTV has been no friend to these news anchors. Nothing kills the illusion of health and youthfulness more than a 720p (or worse, a 1080p) picture.

I agree with the "details" that HDTV brings to life!
However, I mentioned seeing Willa Sandmeyer on last night's news struck me odd seeing she was part of the "bloodbath".

OK, now Bill Smith is doing a live segment from Morro Bay this morning?!?!? 7/10 ???
Their bios are down from the KTLA web site since they got canned....

Well, their names have been removed from the KTLA bio page.

I suspect that their contract calls for them to work for a certain amount of time after being given notice, or it could be KTLA's HR policy to do this (you know, the old two weeks notice?).Either that or all of their contracts are nearly up and they're just not being renewed.

They could also being working on an as-needed freelance basis as Tribune reorganizes the news department. I notice they're advertising for a news reporter/anchor.

(They're also looking for a photographer but I think my days of shooting and editing news and setting up remotes are done. Tempting, though).

At any rate, I suspect that the majority of these people (with the possible exception of Janet Choi) are working at the top of their pay scale and are simply costing the station too much so their contracts are being allowed to lapse.

Is it just my imagination or is Lu Parker the loudest gal on LA-TV?

When she's doing her weather segment, the other anchors will have their lav mics open and you can hear her voice reverberating around the studio and into those mics.

Man, I'd hate to be in a hog calling contest with her. I'd lose for sure.

They'll be working until their contracts expire later in the year. Then, the contracts won't be renewed.

Just to let you know, KTLA just hired a new weather anchor
Former WOIO/WUAB weather anchor Markina Brown joins the KTLA news team as weather anchor
