**Update** on DFW TV Channel 47

We here at the Wise Co. FCC office in Sunset, Texas have received a notice stating that KTAQ, a station in our county viewing area, will be switching to digital on Tuesday, Feburary 18th, 2009 at 12:00 am. That means if viewers of this station have a DTV converter box in the Wise Co. viewing area, then they will be able to view the channel as it transitions. It will be known as the following.
KTAQ-DT 46
47-1
Greenville, Tx
Now we have seen the FCC market map for KTAQ Analog, and it is not going to be a good transition for Northeast North Central Texas. If you have any more info or just need info about this early switch to DTV on KTAQ.... Contact me at [email protected]

It surprised me that AFAIK, KTAQ is the only Dallas-area station planning to switch on the original transition date. I expected Dallas would be more like Oklahoma City, where most of the major network affiliates are still planning to switch 2/17, but enough are waiting until 6/12 that folks who aren't ready won't be left completely without TV.

KTAQ is unusual in that their analog transmitter broadcasts from Greenville, while their digital transmitter broadcasts from Cedar Hill. That means there will be a lot of folks north and east of Greenville losing this station whether they're ready for DTV or not.

Turning the Greenville transmitter into a digital translator station would be the obvious solution, but AFAIK the KTAQ licensees have not applied for a license to do that.

KSTR already went digital only. KLDT has been for some time. So, 3 stations in the market will be digital only as of the original date.

I'm not sure I see what the issue is here. The FCC approved the digital facility in Cedar Hill, so why is there an apparent concern from them about viewers losing KTAQ?

Besides, the (probably) small number of OTA viewers in the Greenville area already have antennas pointing at Cedar Hill, anyway.

Subtle distinction. I knew about the early switchers 49 and 54. There are a couple of low-power digital stations too. But I had expected more than one station to join them Feb. 17. In Okla. City, five of eight network affiliates, including three of the "big five," switched on that date.
