UPDATE: The Death of Newsworld International

It looks like they are going to tough it out to the bitter end.
There is a farewell program at 11:30 PM ET tonight before the network steps over to the dark side and start airing Gore-O-Vision.
______________

Re: UPDATE: The Death of Newsworld International

The plan was always to end it at 11:59 PM ET on 7/31. Whats scary is that some of the nwi staff came over from the CBC....and won't be retained.

Personally, I will miss "The National". A straight forward news program, devoid of the tabloid and hype that permiates the airwaves here in the US. The CBC delivers a classy program, that I will have to access online in the future.

"The National" will be missed greatly and the on-line version isn't just the same.
One can only hope that Al's channel has all the same success as his presidental bid.
______________

It is a shame that NWI is going away. I understand why: the station had no appreciable audience in the US. Al Gore's investors bought it so they could launch his liberal news channel, and they're certainly free to do with it what they want. However, I think it's a shame that NBC/Universal didn't see the golden opportunity they had with this channel when they merged.

NWI could have done well if it had a place on basic cable in most households. It was only in around 20 million households and most of those got it on a high digital channel. NBC/U could have helped make that situation a lot better.

You're talking, of course, about a company that, shortly after its creation, gave DirecTV carte blanche to drop Trio as soon as it could ...

Re: UPDATE: The Death of Newsworld International

C'mon guys, NWI and TRIO were crappy channels. If they were so great they would have gotten better ratings. At least Current is going for a broader audience (even though it's aimed at 18-34).

Except for people on this board, nobody I know watches NWI. And everyone I know has DirecTV, so it's not like it wasn't available to them AND it's right next to The Weather Channel, so it had a good position.

Good riddance.

That's Unfair. The channel's weren't crappy, they just appealed to Niche Audiences. Unfotunatly audiences that were too small to support these kinds of channels. I miss Trio, probably the greatest Cable channel ever.

Sorry passafist, didn't mean to be callous about it. Ive lost alot of channels over the years. And I'm missing out on alot that DirecTV isn't offering.

Point is these big companies start "Niche Channels" and when they find their niche, either the parent company or the cable or sattelite provider pulls the plug and flips it. We see it all too often.

The only way to stop it is for a good percentage of Americans to drop their cable and sattelites in protest.
