UPDATE: WSJL-88.1 is on the air

Heard them today with a fairly clear signal in Pelham, going out of one brokered religious program into another with a computerized voice between shows:
"The time is...4...10...pm...W...S...J...L"

I wonder if that's from their licensed site, or the CP for Bessemer?

Never did hear an hourly ID on it, but my guess is it's still broadcasting with the original facilities. I did attempt to listen to the station here in south shelby county while I was driving around; the signal alternated between being very weak to completely inaudible. I wasn't able to hear it with any listenable signal coming north on I-65 through Pelham and Hoover, either.

I didn't hear a TOH ID myself, just an automated one between one pre-recorded program and another. I heard it fairly clear on US-31 right near the Pelham/Alabaster line. As I headed north on 31, the signal cut in and out with some unID station with country gospel and an apparent pirate with uncensored gangsta rap. Made for an odd listening experience to say the least.

I have heard that pirate on 88.1 before on I-65 around the Alabaster exit. The signal was gone by the time I made it to the hwy 52 exit a few miles north, though. :)

I believe they may be about to flip - check out http://www.myrevradio.com/

Jon Walden, former night guy with WDJC Birmingham is listed as the morning show host form 6am to noon. Format is described as Christian Rock and Hip-Hop. Looks like it will be a non-comm, non-profit relying on listener donations to exist.

My opinion...target audience is 18-24 year old males who like Christian rock and hip-hop, right? I can't imagine that demo supporting a non-comm radio station ever...not to mention this group is the most likely to listen to what they want on Pandora or an iPod. The format won't last long.

I'm like you b5, this presentation will never succeed.

It sounds like it'll be too young.

Besides the youth aren't the ones that give to a listener supported Christian radio station.

It's the adults who do it.

Hence the reason why so many tilt towards the slower music and talk programs.

Just stating the hard cold facts.  If anyone wants to flame me and/or share their thoughts, feel free to do so.  I'll take the licks, like a 40 year old person is supposed to.

What an ironic name...Revocation Radio. I wonder how long it will be before there is a revocation of the format? The 6 kw signal isn't going to cover a whole lot of territory, either. As much as I'd like to see this format and station succeed, I just don't see it happening, myself.

How do the other noncomms in the city manage when they are up against one of the more successful commercial Christian outlets in WDJC-FM?

It's a pretty crowded market already. There's WGIB/WQEM, WLJR, WBFR and WMFT, not to mention the potential for WAY-FM to be on at least two area translators. I suppose one could toss WQOH on AM into the mix. I think it's noncomm now.

It may be a crowded market, but WSJL really isn't competing with all of the above-mentioned outlets. The only real competition in terms of demographic targets are WAY-FM and WDJC, who picks up younger CCM listeners simply by having been the only outlet for so many years.

WSJL, on paper at least, would likely have a better chance to succeed in the Tuscaloosa market than trying to serve the southwest side of Birmingham. This really would have been a great pickup for WAY-FM given they just signed on a station in the Gadsden area.

Actually, if you could move it just a bit to the southeast, you could target the up and coming areas of Shelby County-Hoover, Pelham, Alabaster, etc. The format would definitely have to be an older target, and the temptation to target Birmingham would always be there.

I've been in Bessemer for the last few days and there's no trace of anything on 88.1 except for a whisp of the MPB affiliate from Meridian.

I wonder how well low end radios will tune this station. In the car, I am getting some bleed over from the digital WUOA signal on channel 6. It's stopping the scan on both 87.5 and 87.7.

Ok...mass confusion going on here folks, lol. I was checking out the Rev Radio Facebook page last night and they were discussing the weak signal. The folks at Rev Radio said the station couldn't be heard in Birmingham for the most part, but mostly in areas of St. Clair County, such as Moody, Leeds, Odenville, etc. I'm over here thinking...if Rev Radio can't be received in metro Birmingham, how is it people can be hearing it in Leeds and Moody? ???

I posted this inquiry on their wall, and the administrators replied back telling me that the transmitter is in Odenville, not Bessemer. Odenville?? ??? Ummm...my geography isn't all that great, but last time I looked Odenville wasn't anywhere near Bessemer. So, I went back to the FCC website to see where the disconnect was. Rev Radio isn't WSJL in Bessemer, it's WKRE licensed to Argo. I guess with those two stations being on the same frequency and both close to Birmingham, we were under the assumption they were one and the same station.

I don't see how this station is going to upgrade, with it being co-channel with WSJL there in Bessemer, unless they are planning on moving to another frequency or buying another FM somewhere.
