Updated Details on New Sacto Move in at 93.3

New Details have surfaced in the Clear Channel Move in - Susanville's 93.3 to Pollock Pines,
an application has been filed to Downgrade KOSO 93.1 Patterson - Modesto to Class A (6000 Watts)
at 92.9 with a transmitter south of Modesto and Upgrade the 93.3 to Class B1 (25,000 Watts) at 93.1 from the KCCL 92.1 Stick above Placerville, Looking at the signal over Sacramento it will be almost the same as KHYL - Now what they do with it ?

Here's a link to the FCC application:

KOSO would be downgraded to a Class A and will only serve Modesto.

Now it's understandable why Clear Channel was interested in this move-in. At first glance a few months ago, the purchase looked silly.

Here's a scenario that may take place in Sacramento in the next few months:

1. Clear Channel will buy KCCL-FM from First Broadcasting/Alta.

2. Clear Channel will move the KCCL oldies format to the new 93.1 and probably evolve into Classic Hits.

3. Clear Channel will then flip 92.1 to Spanish Oldies..La Preciosa.

The reason I say this is that there have been rumors to First/Alta selling KCCL to Clear Channel. If that is true, they will want to limit confusion with KGBY at 92.5. Also..There is history in the market for Spanish on that frequency.

Maybe they won't buy 92.1 and flip 93.1 to Spanish oldies or something else.

Any other theories?

I don't understand why the application is to broadcast at 93.1? What's wrong with 93.3? It seems that signal crossover at 93.1 would be an issue (even with KOSO downgraded to a Class A). This is because, from that tower site (elevation and location), 92.1's signal reaches Stockton surprisingly well, thus, a 20kw signal would be stronger and affect to the Modesto area.

It would make sense CC would want to buy out KCCL's tower (and 92.1)...then use that frequency for one of CC's other popular formats. That would give CC a larger chunk of the market with 6 stations (4 FM + 2 AM). Maybe they would pursue a more traditional KHYL oldies sound for 93.1 if KCCL was moved over. Or, maybe not. Interesting...

I see two possible formats:

1. I think AAA would do well. This is a good rock market, but no station is servicing the higher end/more sophisticated Rock listener who is tired of Bad Co., certain Zep and Who tunes, and wants to here U2, Dave Matthews, Big Head Todd, the Fray, and others. The Eagle is a good station, but a AAA could get some of their P2's who like Rock but have evolved out of the Classic Rock genre. 100.5 plays crap, 98.5 is for hair (not hair band) and heavy, heavy sound, they do their format well also. A Triple A would do well 25-54 and 35-54 & 64 men and women. Think KFOG, though with a style and presentation that fits Sac.

2. FM Talk. More expensive (potentially), but have a live AM show, maybe PM show, the rest you syndicate, using possibly the Air America format from KSAC. CC could run it better and make it work as they have in numerous other markets, while also holding the more conservative talk. CC then would have the Talk format cornered in the market.

Either of these I believe would work.
