Updated JRN, KLBU, KTWV files

I have been doing some spring cleaning and have been running across some CD-R's that have some .mp3 files of the Jones Smooth Jazz Network, KLBU (Blu 102.9) Santa Fe, NM, some early KTWV from 27 August 1987.

Some of the 192/44.1 files were too large for my 4shared folder, so I used Sendspace instead--eventually I will re-encode these files to fit--but in the meantime, here are the links to the JRN files from 3-6 February 2004:

3 February 2004-a (JRN)

5 February 2004 (JRN)

6 February 2004 (JRN)

An additional JRN file from 22 March 2005 can be located in my JRN folder:

The early aircheck of KTWV can be found in this folder:

The BLU 102.9 can be found here--the updated folder includes an aircheck from 27 July 2004:

Hey spirit:

Thanks for sharing these fabulous Jones files...the sound quality is fantastic!!

After listening to some of these fine samples, it still puzzles me how such a high quality product as JSJ died. It saddens me to listen to these, knowing that we will likely never hear a terrestrial radio equivalent to JSJ again in our lifetimes. :(

Completely agree with, DD. Great stuff, spirit!!! I always love taking a trip memory lane. Thanks much!!!

These KTWV files are incredible. I could only ID a few of songs (Michael Tomlinson, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, EBTG) in the first hour. Notice how the station didn't ID any of the cuts they played, which kind of drove me crazy.

Where did you get this scope? Streaming at that time was just a dream. Superb sound to these.

This was the beginning of the "smooth jazz" format, but they really played no smooth jazz. And they didn't classify their format as "smooth jazz".

Wish there could be terrestrial radio stations going back to this sound again. Sounds really fresh even after 2 decades. None of that "smooth AC" garbage.
I'd rather listen to these and the Jones feeds over and over and over rather than that putrid BA shit.

I'm glad you all have enjoyed these recordings.

Majaman, the KTWV aircheck was included in a sales packet that was sent to me by the Satellite Music Network (SMN) in Dallas. The network had just launched a syndicated version of The Wave. When I heard this tape I was hooked. When ABC bought SMN, they phased out the format in 1990.

For almost two years, KTWV was jockless, but added personalities in 1989. There are several songs on this aircheck I STILL cannot identify. Based on the "musicletters" they sent me (thank you Louise Barron), KTWV kept this kind of format until 1993 or 1994, when the "Smooth Jazz" moniker took hold.

Double D, as far as the Jones airchecks, believe it or not, the original source-stream was only 32 kbps. WJSJ had a great sounding stream considering it's low bitrate. Most of my recordings were made on minidisc and I loaded them on a PC as a .wav file and were then converted to .mp3

It isn't puzzling to me that programming like JRN's format didn't survive. Radio caters to advertisers, and as a result, aims for the lowest common denominator to reach the largest audience possible. That's why I roll sound on anything that interests me.

And don't feel too sad about the loss of JRN--between Chris' .Wav stream, and the airchecks I have, that should more than make up for it.

Thanks again for listening, spirit :). I am amazed that the JRN airchecks were at 32kbps. Incredible sound at that rate!!

For you and everyone else on this board who either broadcasts from the Internet or enjoys Internet radio on a daily basis, some very important legislation that would give small Internet broadcasters parity with larger commercial radio outlets (i.e., in terms of the payment of royalties) made it out of Committee yesterday. By no means is it a done deal, as it still needs to pass the full House (and Senate) before it can be signed into law. But this is a very important first step for the little guys.
