Preset Reason
AM
630 Local news and weather updates
790 Yankees games
990 Morbid curiosity
1290 NPR national news and long-form programming
1320 Same reason as 990
1480 When I'm feeling nostalgic for what local talk radio used to be like

Preset Reason
FM
89.3 Jazz and Blues on Sundays
89.7 Jazz in the evenings
99.7 For areas where the 630 signal is not really listenable
102.7 For areas where the 1290 signal is not really listenable
103.7 Red Sox games

The only change on my preset buttons has been that I've removed 99.3 since the format change.

Co hosts openly detesting each other on a morning show and a cobbled together PM drive because the PD's ego is over inflated to the point she left her show open to be on in the morning earlier? Thats nostalgia? well then, I think we come along way

Yes indeed nostalga!!......

Doesn't anyone remember the OPEN ANIMOSITY that Sherm Strickhouser and Steve White used to have for each other?

Doesn't anyone remember the idiotic Eddie Beard having his very own talk show at one point?

Doesn't anyone remember the moronic right wing ramblings of 990 WALE's Jim McLaughlin??

Doesn't anyone remember possibly the WORST local talk radio show in the history of the market.....990 WALE's Joe Caliri??

I could go on and on.......

Nostalga doesn't necessarily have to be POSITIVE ;)

XM PRESETS
Decades because I can start there & keep hitting "seek" to go from the 40s through the 90s & into all the country channels, bluegrass, & folk, as they're all in a row.
Deep Tracks
Starbucks Cafe
The Loft
Soul Street
High Standards
With XM on one of my bands, I can't do any other FM presets so I'm just using "seek"
On AM, since I catch WPRO on FM when I'm seeking I'm just listening to True Oldies & WELH when they play solid gold, oldies, & soul.

My Presets

AM

630 WPRO
880 WCBS
920 WHJJ
1030 WBZ
1480 WSAR

FM

92.3 Pro-FM
92.9 WBOS
95.5 WBRU
104.1 WBCN
107.9 KISS FM

Rockhead , you mentioned Steve White and Sherm Strickhouser. My memory is foggy; what station were they on at the same time? Also did Steve ever work for the Providence Journal/Evening Bulletin that you know of? I seem to remember some kind of connection at one point. Drifting in and out of a market causes incomplete memory streams. :D

No......Steve White never had any connection to the Providence Journal-Bulletin.....(except for some sort of mail-in "popularity poll" that he and his followers rigged during his time at 990 WALE in the early 90's). You might be thinking of John Martin, who was media critic for the paper some years ago, and before that had an evening call-in talk show on the former WEAN 790. I always did like John......such a classy individual. For that matter, so was Chuck Wilson, who did a sports show there at around that same time frame......talk about moving on to bigger and better things. :)

As for Sherm Strickhouser and Steve White working "together" (i use that term very loosely) ;D......That was in the very early 80's at 920 WHJJ. If I'm remembering correctly, the line-up at the time had a local news block in the mornings until 9 am (forget just exactly who anchored)......Sherm from 9 to 11am......Steve White from 11am to 1pm......Some sort of relationships/advice/self-help call-in show hosted by area Psychiatrist Dr. Steven Crausman from 1 to 3pm......And Steve Kass from 3 to 6pm. There may have been some sort of sports show after that, but I'm blanking out on who may have hosted.

Very shortly after this line-up was implemented, they dumped Dr. Crausman's advice show to make way for a four hour 'flight' from 11 am to 3 pm.

During this time frame, former Congressman Eddie Beard also had a show there on Saturday afternoons, sometime during the mid-day hours.

Poor Steve Kass......There were any number of occasions where the first part of his program would consist entirely of trying to calm down or put out whatever brush fire or whirlwind that had been created on Steve White's show during the last air shift. It would actually take Kass a while before he could actually "start his own show".

Thanks! I worked with Steve Wight many moons ago, before he made a splash in Providence. He was a most unusual personality to say the least. Funny how some local personalities sound great in Rhode Island, but take them out of that element, and they wouldn't cut it elsewhere. Joe Thomas, Big Ange, Chuck Stevens, and Steve Wight come to mind, not to mention Salty, but he's in a different category all together. As I see it they ARE Rhode Island, and the humor, wit and style they displayed on the air, along with allowing folks the opportunity to see them as real people, and not as "announcers" made them successful. Take them out of the Ocean State however, and they are all fish out of water. I worked with both Steve W. amd Jack Manzi (Big Ange) early on in their respective careers before they became "Kansas City Stars". The showmanship they displayed (in raw, early form) was undeniable, and I could see that they might be able to make it to "Providence proper". Their technique of broadcasting, while engaging, through their "sloppy board work", combined with an almost unbelievable ability to communicate directly with their listeners, and disorganized and uneven air presentation, would not travel well. That's not a dig, just an observation. Rhode Island is a unique place indeed. I'm glad I grew up there, and take a bit of it with me wherever I go. That's a good thing!

Oh man you hit quite a bit of RI history on the head-all hall of fame moments

Several months ago I mentioned that Joe Caliri on WALE as being the worst host the state has seen-ever! I was very disapointed no one seemed to remember.
I was right in the middle of the Sherm, Steve White, Eddie Beard "extravaganza". I was with HJY, but had every opportunity to join in the fun on Eastern Ave. Whether it was going out with SW as a bodyguard or helping him open lots of envelops from old ladies who stuffeed them with cash for Steve's "nonprofit" fund-HOPE (helping out people everywhere)the fun never stuffed. That cash Help Out Paying Everything at a bar in pawtuxet village. Steve white would come in for his 10am and the stricker would waddle out the back. My absolute favor though was when the Journal was at the station to cover this new found excitment in RI radio, when Steve and Eddie start to have words in the lobby. When blows are just about to fall the projo reporter walks into the lobby. Both Ed and Steve's right hooks all of a sudden head to their own heads to smooth out some untidy hair. classic!

1) Hot 106
2) Fun 107
