Upgrading to Direct TV HD question..

I am not sure where to post this. We have had Direct TV for years. We got a standard receiver now, but if I wanted to go to HD, how will this work? Will I need to change packages and everything? I'm trying to figure this out.
Thanks for any help....

I have Direct but not HD. I think there is a monthly upgrade charge and a monthly
HD receiver rental fee.........correct me if I'm wrong guys.

There is a $9.99 monthly charge for HD access. You will also need to upgrade your receivers from SD to HD (the HD receivers have a higher monthly charge, but you can probably work out some kind of deal if you talk to the right CS rep). They will also need to come out and upgrade your dish from the round dish to the oval dish (it's about 50% larger than the round dish), since the HD channels are on different frequencies. One thing you'll notice is that the HD channels are much more susceptible to rain fade than SD channels because they are transmitted using narrower signals. So you'll want to make sure that new dish gets installed exactly right or you'll run into a lot of problems. It took several tries to get mine right.

Note: I have not been a Directv customer since 2009, but this is how things were back then.

HD receivers are the same price as SD box. You pay $9.99/month for an HD fee but that can be waived if you have autopay. You get a bigger dish that can see the 99 and 103 satellites in addition to the 101. If you gat an HD DVR and connect it to high speed internet, you get on demand.

If you commit to CC Autopay I think they have waved the HD access.... If you are a good customer in good standing I am sure with a new contract you can get the HR24 with DVR at a good deal... also make sure if you do get an HD DVR that you get CinemaPlus as well so that you can take advantage of all the OnDemand goodies that D* offers... CC

Thanks for the info!

I was a DirecTV customer. When I got an HD receiver I tried to upgrade. I had to get a new box and a new oval shaped disk. Unfortunately, the HD satellite is in a different position than the original satellite. I'd been getting an SD signal for 10 years but I could not get a signal from the HD satellite (due to a neighbor's tree). Bottom line: You will probably have to install a new dish plus get a new box.

I too am a former DirecTV customer. Don't even bother asking for their "Free HD for Life" as they claim they can only offer it to their new customers. Between working their regular customer service and "executive" customer service the best they would offer me was a $10 a month credit for 24 months. That's odd ... I think most of us would live longer than 24 months! If they could afford to give it to new customers they can afford to give it to the ones who have been there for years - they just won't!

They did me a favor! I called them back and dropped them like a lead weight. A good friend of mine did likewise a few months later. I get to save more money by utilizing alternatives and they lose out on my business.

I would consider all of your available options before you get in any deeper with DirecTV. Your "upgrade" may put you on the hook for another contract period, especially if you get "free" equipment from them. I couldn't be happier being an ex-customer of theirs!
