UPN and WB going this fall

UPN, WB to Combine to Form New Network
By SETH SUTEL, AP Business Writer

NEW YORK - Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will merge to form a new network called The CW, executives from the companies that own them said Tuesday.

The announcement was made by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns WB.

Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, News Corp.'s Fox, General Electric Co.'s NBC and CBS Corp.'s CBS.

The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, and both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., which is a minority owner of the WB network.

Among the Tribune's TV stations that will join the new network are its flagship WGN in Chicago as well as WPIX in New York, and KTLA in Los Angeles.

Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.

Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

In light of this announcement, how much does anyone wanna bet Gannett drops KTVD 20 like a hot potato?

If they don't, they'll be stuck running it as a traditional Indie...

Thoughts?

Cheers :)

Well as I remember reading about that, the manager of KTVD would love to have the station as an INDIE anyways! Infact he also stated that they didnt really need to have UPN in the first place. So who knows if Gannett buys or folds on the whole thing. I would be surprise if they did buy it, and if so what would it look like after this summer?

I'm thinking it'll look more like KCAL 9 in LA or KTVK 3 Phoneix are right now or (at the very least) what KONG 6/16 in Seattle will look like once the i/PAX network folds (or Belo just simply decides to dump it, whichever comes first).

Another good reference would be all those current FOX-owned UPN affiliates (You know News Corp. isn't going to just run those on the cheap side).

That's my take on the matter. Suffice to say, it will be most interesting though. :)

Cheers :)

He should dumb the I network! It is a joke unless he loves having nothing but paid commericals from 10:30pm until 4pm the next following day! That network isn't even worth any station to pick up! Part time shows in the afternoon and sighns off at 10 MST? That has to be the worse network ever in this country!
Anyways yeah it would be interesting to see how those two stations would do once WB and UPN is gone.
