AM I reading the story right? It looks like to me that they will have two channels one with CBS on it and the other with UPN on it.
Edited by OnTexasTime on 10/09/05 11:20 PM.

This has actually happened in a number of markets.
Here's how this will work:

KYTX broadcasts on analog channel 19. Their HDTV station is KYTX-DT on channel 18. DTV stations have the ability to "multiplex" or broadcast more than one channel of programming on each channel.

For example: in Dallas, KPXD broadcasts Pax (or "i" as it's now called) on 68.1
They broadcast the west coast feed of "i" on 68.2, Worship (religous music videos) on 68.3 and Faith tv on 68.4.

So for KYTX, all it means is that 18.1 will have the regular KYTX and CBS programming (sometimes in HD) and 18.2 will have UPN and syndicated programming.

The cable and satellite operators will just pick up the feed from 18.2 and put it on their systems.

Hmmm...Interesting. KCEB-54 currently has a CP to move to channel 38. I wonder if this will now be abandoned, or if they have other plans for channel 38?

I expect KETK to put the WB on a sub-channel when they finally go full-power.

Similar deal with CBS and UPN in Amarillo. KFDA-DT runs CBS and UPN streams on two of its subchannels, and throws in Telemundo on a third.

Multicasting is a good deal for the broadcast station - using the same amount of transmit power to send out multiple program streams. However, it is usually a bad deal for the HD viewers, because it reduces the amount of bandwidth available for the HD bit streams, and compression has to be cranked up to compensate. More compression = more artifacts.

Yes, that's true.. but... the extra programming is not something you would usually want to watch.

I wish one of the stations would pick up America One or Urban America TV (which is no longer on KHPK-LP in Dallas) There are at least some shows on those channels that I'd watch.

Many stations have chosen to multicast - that is, carry more than one program on their digital data stream. The 6 MHz wide ATSC channel provides a bandwidth of 19.2 Mbit/s, and a broadcast station can slice up this "pie" however they want. A digital set top box receives all of these additional streams. For instance, at my house, I can receive the following digital channels:

28.1 KTBS-HD 3.1 ABC-HD
28.2 KTBS-WX 3.2 Weather Radar
28.3 KTBS-DT 3.3 24 hour news
17.1 KSLA-DT 12.1 CBS-HD
17.2 Tube 12.2 The Tube music videos
18.1 KYTX-DT 19.1 CBS-HD
21.1 KPXJ-HD 21.1 UPN-HD
21.2 KPXJ-DT 21.2 UPN Standard Def
34.1 KMSS-DT 33.1 Fox-HD

In January, KYTX will be adding UPN programming to RF channel 18.2. In the Dallas area, I believe that KXAS carries NBC-HD programming on 41.1 and Weather Plus on 41.2.

Yes you get more choices

For intstance

6.1 NBC-TV
6.2 Infomercials
6.3 Infomercials
6.4 Infomercials
6.5 NBC Shopping
6.6 Infomercials

Not 100% true but I bet THAT will be the future of multicasting
