Ever wonder or know how this is going to work the night (or day) CW debuts? How about with My Network? Will we see color bars, static, tech slides, or what? How will this all work? Stations are going either CW, My Network, or Independent. How will all the transitions work? Will there be primetime specials? How will the networks be promoted on TV? Have they started to work out the plans? So many questions, so little time!

WWOR transitioned to the MyTV branding weeks ago after dropping all UPN branding.

And so Joseph Gallantish too. Someone please tell me we're not going to let this become yet another episode of Radio-Info.com TV Board Speculation Theater here. That all said, and at the risk of sounding hypocritical given the above, here's my take on what will happen...Look...Let's remember that The WB now has a Daytime lineup (such that it is). Plus, a lot of current WB and UPN affiliates will not be a part of the new CW network for one reason or another. As such, it would be awkward (if not downright tacky) to force these stations to promote fall programming which they will never air by promoting the new fall lineup over the networks themselves. Given this, I would not be surprised if The CW just simply gave the ads to the affiliates to air during non-network times. Now, getting back to the Daytime lineup thing....There won't be a sign off/sign on like you would see when two local stations switch networks. That's because The WB has a Daytime lineup and UPN does not. Therefore any "sign off" will go unnoticed and any "sign on" will only be noticeable when they start saying stuff like Welcome To The New CW or You're Watching The New CW Daytime. As for MyNetwork TV, they will have a more traditional sign on as they are a completely new network. Just my opinion :)Cheers :)Pat

Holy smokes, Pat!! First the Clippers/Suns thread, and now this... you're off your meds today, aren't you? :DCalm down man. There's no harm in a little speculation every now and then. It's not like Ethan is posting wild speculation in a contrived effort to be the first person to 10,000 posts. (Even if he is, he has a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally long way to go! ;D)Back to the topic, I don't know exactly how it will go down, but count on it happening with maximum fanfare.

They probably won't make a big deal about it. When WTXX in Hartford (COL Waterbury) flipped from UPN to WB in January 2001 they began branding themselves as WB 20 back in December 2000. Channel 59 was still calling themselves WB59 until 7AM the next mornign. That's when they went from WB59 WBNE to "The X" WCTX - Connectcut's UPN station). (Now called UPN 9 as they are on 9 on most cable systems)

I'd suspect that it will be somewhat comparable to the affiliation swaps that happened in many markets during the mid-nineties when Fox upgraded its affiliate list. In other words, no color bars, static, slides, or anything of the sort -- remember, all the syndicated and local programming that surrounds the network programs will be unchanged. So it is really just a few hours a day that is changing. But I do recall that locally we did have specials running on the two affected stations in the mid-nineties to explain and promote the programming changes that were about to happen. Some stations may choose to do the same thing today -- run a half hour program a few days before the switch explaining what new programming they will have.Aside from that, as I recall, the CW was requiring that affiliates do a certain amount of on-air and off-air advertising of the new network and its programming in the period just before and just after the launch.

From what i understand, WB will air a farewell video highlighting the best (and mainly worst) of their networkUPN, might do the same

I don't mean to be flip here, but I wonder how many people will even notice. It's not like either network was hugely sucsessful. It's one thing when an ABC, NBC, or CBS stations flips but even Fox is somewhat limited to nights. The afternoon WB consists of what? Reruns? Big deal.

I don't think you're being flip at all. If more people cared, the 2 networks would have had better ratings and we wouldn't be talking about the CW or MyNetworkTV.Any predictions of fanfare or farewells are probably (and in my case definitely) based on the entertainment industry's penchant for self-aggrandizement rather than on their actual merit. Myself, I wasn't thinking so much about UPN's and the WB's sign-offs as much as I was thinking about the CW's sign-on. I may be wrong about this, and this is pure speculation with no facts to back it up, but I expect Moonves & Co. to pitch the CW as the best thing on TV since the set-top cable converter box.

at 12:01 AM, the Starship Enterprise will move across the screen and blastMichigan J. Frog with a volley of photon torpedoes. Both will explode andvaporize, leaving the sparkling new CW logo floating in the background. :D

Now that would be worth seeing!! 8) Think you might be able to demo that for us?

The last time I saw a major affiliate switch was back in 94 or 95 when KDFW, KTVT, and KDAF in Dallas.....from what I recall all three made the switch at 10PM after KDFW aired its last night of CBS programming....in the days leading up to the affiliate switch, KDFW and KTVT aired specials and stuff on the news that touted the switch, including new news sets for both KDFW and KTVT (doesn't KDFW still use that news set from 95, with minor alterations for the 9PM News?)

But then again, KDAF got the WB affiliation from KXTX with no fanfare........

You won't see color bars.
I actually remember watching the debut of Fox's prime time programming. (even though Fox itself started with The Late Show with Joan Rivers in October of 1986) As I recall, there was a graphic and voice over that said you're watching Fox, then they hit the famous open to Married With Children.

There won't be much difference or fanfare. Several years ago in Boston market, channel 7 was the CBS station and channel 4 was NBC. Those stations decided to change affiliations and so daytime really was no different as the local news programs remained the same, the only difference was the night or primetime. It take a while for it to catch on.

Re: WB sign-off

Michigan J. Frog will indeed be part of the WB's final night... as will rebroadcasts of the pilots of Felicity, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dawson's Creek. All this will take place on Sunday September 17.
