UPN & WB Networks To Merge

As I understand, this article implies that the NY market will have a free station (on either 9 or 11) post-merger. Unless, of course, this new CW network spans two channels.

Jan 24, 2006 11:40 am US/Eastern
(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) Two small, struggling television networks, UPN and WB, will merge to form a new network called The CW, executives from the companies that own them said Tuesday.

The announcement was made by executives from CBS Corp., which owns UPN, and Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., which owns WB.

Both UPN and WB had struggled to compete against larger rivals in the broadcast TV business, including Walt Disney Co.'s ABC, News Corp.'s Fox and CBS Corp.'s CBS.

The new network will launch in the fall, the executives said, and both UPN and WB will shut down. It will be a 50-50 partnership between Warner Bros. and CBS, and the network will be carried on stations owned by the Tribune Co., which is a minority owner of the WB network.

Leslie Moonves, chief executive of CBS Corp., said the new network will air 30 hours of programming seven days a week aimed in part at young audiences.

Barry Meyer, the head of Warner Bros., said the network would be run by the current executives of UPN and WB.

WPIX/11 Will Be The CW Flagship

As I understand, the deal is for CBS-owned UPN stations, and Tribune-owned WB stations, specifically those that don't share the market with a CBS-owned UPN station. In New York's case, WWOR/9 is owned by Fox.<P ID="signature">______________

What happens to UPN9/WWOR?

I look forward to seeing WWOR become an independent once again. Too bad FOX5/WNYW and its parent company has them in a chokehold.

Local News Re: UPN & WB Networks To Merge

I made a similar post asking about what will happen with the local newscasts on The CW networks.

Do you think they will combine UPN 9 and WB11 newscasters together or something?

Personally, I prefer the WB 11 news team.

This should be interesting!

No.

'PIX is owned by Tribune while 'WOR is owned by FOX.

The newscasts will continue as is.

Yeah, I agree with you.

Something tells me that this and other Fox O&O's that were UPN affiliates being shafted by this merger will do some sort of network. A Sky-USA perhaps?
