Upstate: 94.5 format change 12-3-12

Well,...(Sensored verb)Great! A Big stick FM Stereo frequency broadcasting...Practical Blab. With all the music stations in the GSP market limping on one leg, and missing a big toe,...the last thing we need is more...Gum Flappin'. Pick a music format, hire an Airstaff, and in one book, you're in the top 3; double digits by the third book. Call it a missed oppertunity.
I call it Shallow-Stuffed Shirt-Short thought!

I hope they add some HD channels to their signal so at least we can have a chance at something else thats new & good :)

I doubt this new station will do that well, but only really against WORD.
I hope the loser of the WORD & WMUU battle flips very soon... ;)

Third rate talkers on a first rate signal. Great.
106.3 will win, hands down. Are any of these people, save for Gallagher (who may have a few successful affiliates, like he did in WORD), even popular? What a dud of an idea for a format.

Unfortunately, I doubt the HD channels will be anything impressive if there ever are any. Just the same stuff as on 89.3...

Where does this leave 660?

In that case, I hope Entercom offers to trade Salem 106.3 (with a couple million of course) in exchange for 94.5
Might as well also give up 1330 & 950 to knock off some of the cost as well....Salem doesn't mind operating on the AM dial :)

I see alot of cool stuff happening if that goes down...but I doubt it will THAT soon.
When the bad ratings show up I hope Salem wants out... ;)

Salem will never, ever take their paws off of this signal. The upper management has close connections with the University. They are making a HUGE deal out of Mike Gallagher and seem to be banking on that for success. No offense, but if he's the best they've got, there is cause for concern. I was hoping they would do something local, since Russ & Lisa and Bob McLain are all we have around here as far as local talk, and just aren't very good. Russ Cassell comes off as downright mean, to me. I honestly feel he has long overstayed his welcome.

Salem's talkers are some of the most boring in the biz. They never seem to try to bring in any fresh talent. They fit on the poor-signaled AM's they have always been on, not full market FM signals like Columbus or Greenville. I think a second news/talk station would have a chance at injuring WORD here, especially with a strong local presence, but it won't happen as long as the likes of Michael Medved and Dennis Prager are pitted against the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham.

Salem really doesn't care about ratings. Indeed, I don't think it subscribes to Arbitron for most of its Talk stations (much less, for most of its Teaching stations).
Then they should just keep the music.

Wow, there is going to be a huge area that becomes a complete wasteland in a couple of weeks.

I'm thinking out loud...anyone think Salem will ever grab 106.9 The Light WMIT?

WMIT is trying to stay in the game with a added full power translator in east Tennessee at 106.7. There now just the Light.

It's actually a full power FM which they purchased earlier this year. They recently changed the legal ID to WFGW-FM - heritage calls of their sister AM, which has supposedly been sold to a Hispanic group. But, as I drove through Asheville over the weekend, WFGW(AM) is still running its conservative talk/Christian teaching format.

Nope.

G

When Billy Graham was in charge, never, no chance. But with Franklin now making the decisions, anything could happen. Would not be surprised to see it sold at some point.

Billy Graham organization owns 106.9 and it is heard from Georgia to Charlotte. Tall tower, very strong signal. I think they are on Mt. Pisgah.

94.5 could pick up the new Herman Cain program next year after he takes over from Neal Boortz. But its success remains to be seen. Although I wish Boortz would just cut back his hours a bit rather than retire.

I don't see why Salem would want it. WMIT's music these days is garbage (I remember when it was good), which translates into popularity, while WMUU is one of the few good music stations left.

I discovered yesterday they were playing Christmas music. What a shame Salem can't even give over-the-air listeners a month of Christmas music.

Here's an idea. Swap the formats. Secular music on WMUU was daytime-only anyway. Although in the summer sacred music started during daylight. And it was the format on Sundays.

I have always had the most respect and admired WMUU's current longtime format (which ends this weekend), though it's not my cup of tea. Therefore, I rarely listen to them - except for the last few days. Not once have I heard any on-air mention that these are their final days - which I REALLY would have at least thought would have been mentioned this morning. But, it wasn't. From looking at their website and listening to them, one would never guess these are their final hours as a station that's been around for so long. Have I just not been tuned in at the right moment the past few days to hear any farewells?

Eric
