We lost the legendary textile league and minor league baseball announcer and infamous salesman Lary Gar last week. I've known Larry since I was a kid and have heard countless stories about his announcing and sales techniques. His brooklyn accent and larger than life persona is something you just don't find in the radio of today. The Golden Generation and us younger folks all extend condolences to his family and mourn the loss of another old school radio legend. A copy of his obituary from "The State" follows:

LAURENS — Larry Gar, age 75, of 893 Trinity Church Road, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, in Greer.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, a son of the late Michael and Alice Feldman Goldberg.

Mr. Gar retired after many years in radio as a sportscaster, sales and marketing. Locally he worked with WLBG, WSSL and WPCC. He was a past president of Laurens Dixie Youth Baseball, past president of the Presbyterian College Diamond Club and a longtime Clemson IPTAY representative. He was a member of the Laurens Exchange Club, the Laurens County Fair Association, Laurens VFW, Hejaz Shrine Temple. Mr. Gar was the play-by-play announcer for the Greenwood Braves, an Atlanta Braves minor league team. He was a member of the Laurens District 55 Hall of Fame and in 2005, the North/South High School Football game was dedicated in his honor. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Lovette Gar of the home; one son, Joey Gar and his wife, Beth, of Simpsonville; two daughters, Laura Campbell and husband, Jim, of Gray Court, Beth McCrary and husband, Sam, of Lexington, SC; one brother, Jerry Goldberg and wife, Jan, of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren, Lindsey and Matthew Campbell, Ryan and Hannah McCrary and Tori and Evan Gar.

Funeral service will be conducted at the Gray Funeral Home chapel, Saturday, Sept. 30th, at 10 a.m. with burial in Westview Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Laurens County Dixie Youth Baseball, P.O. Box 472, Laurens, SC 29360 or the Shiner’s Children Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

The family will be at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Jim Campbell, 897 Lincoln Road, Gray Court, SC.

Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.grayfuneralhome.com.

Goose,

I appreciate your recognition of Mr. Gar's passing. There are people that stand out for many reasons and Mr. Gar did so in such a positive way. I don't think there is anyone that met Larry that doesn't remember it. He was one of the those gentlemen that you just don't forget meeting even if it was for just a few minutes. My sincere condolances to the entire Gar family and South Carolina radio will truly miss a gentleman that represents a true broadcast professional in every way no matter the market.

I hate to hear that you have given up on the radio industry but maybe you have found that it just isn't fulfilling anymore, but it is clear that the love of radio is still in you.

Come to South Georgia and enjoy the business again.................................?

Just to put my 2cents in for Larry. I was one of the many high schoolers that Bill Hogan hired at $1.60/hr to "ride the board" for Larry's Greenwood Braves' games. When my Mom died in 1988, I found a cassette tape from 1968 of the first time my voice was on the air live with "WLBG-FM Laurens." Boy, was THAT a long time ago! Larry was always busy, but never too busy to help us learn more about the business - HIS way, of course :) The only time we had a REAL argument was when his 15 minute cart of spots for the pregame show had a "dead" spot after the last spot that was longer than his segment. "Dead Air" was NOT in his vocabulary!!

Memories of him will be around in my head as long as I'm here. I just hope some of the people I've helped get started in radio can say the same things about me that people are saying about Larry...

I'm not in the business anymore, but I still have dreams about a record ending and having NOTHING TO DO!!!

RIP Mr Gar, and thanks for having time for me in your busy world...
