Upton Bell joins WCRN

Upton Bell has joined WCRN-AM in Worcester. Here is the link to a story from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette - http://www.telegram.com/article/20070620/COLUMN45/706200665/1008/NEWS02

Although Upton will initially be a part of the Peter Blute show, the article hints of his own show sometime in the future.

"There’s some speculation that WCRN is considering giving Mr. Bell a show of his own."

If that were to happen, I would think it would be in place of Laura Ingraham from 1 to 3 p.m. making WCRN live & local from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you add in the Red Sox broadcasts, WCRN will have a local presence most of the day.

What a refreshing concept, live & local radio!

Worcester seems to be one of the worst-managed cities in Massachusetts. So much potential, it serves as nothing more than a waypoint for people driving from one end of the state to the other. It has an airport no one cares about and a downtown that held much promise yet hasn't been realized. Hopefully local radio can percolate these issues to the top where they get some visibility.

I don't want to get too far off topic but before you jump to conclusions about the 2nd largest city in Massachusetts, you may want to visit this website before making any additional disparaging remarks about Worcester.

With all due respect, that is a self-serving promotional piece. CitySquare could very well turn out to be another Galleria...and we all know what happened there. Hopefully it will evolve successfully and cause a renaissance for the City of Worcester. But the track record is not good, most would admit. And while it isn't the be-all-end-all, a good airport helps. Worcester cares not a bit about its airport, which has no airlines serving it. If people from Massachusetts aren't going to downtown Worcester and people from around the country can't even get there, what are you left with besides a slick-looking web site that touts CitySquare?

no surprise he'd be at a Worc. station as he used to be at WTAG.

He also spent some time at the Alex Langer stations; brought under the fold with the acquisition of WSRO (then on the very poor Marlboro-licensed 1470), and moved over to WRPT 650 and then afternoons on WMEX 1060... I think he stayed for a bit when they converted to WBIX but not completely sure.

Worcester does ave it's problems and you would think that a city that has that many college's wold be in better shape but the 496 area around Worcester is the fatest growing area in Massachusetts. That is the reason that Ch 4 opened up a Worcester bureau but I think there camera shots of downtown Worcester are kind of funny because 99% of the people who are new home owners in the 495 area have never been n downtown Worcester.

WTAG a once great local station is now a shell of it's former self.

David, no offense but most of Worcester is a toilet. I'm there five days a week. I know there are some folks working hard to take it up a notch but there is a LONG way to go. Simply building a few restaurants is not going to have any effect.

Perhaps Citysquare needs to hire Judith Light as their spokeswoman. Worked for Worcester Common Outlets... ::)

Sadly, downtown Worcester is too close to some of the highest crime neighborhoods in the city (Main South, Pleasant St, Piedmont, etc). Nobody wants to be there after dark, let alone LIVE there. Every time they try to "reinvent" the city, they somehow manage to fall flat on their faces. Maybe it's time for some "Strong Mayor" type leadership to guide them out of the muck. Until then, the 146/290 interchange project is moving right along, which will help Worcesterites get to Providence in record time!

Back on topic, I hope WCRN succeeds at what they're doing... at the very least I hope they have better luck than WORC-AM a few years back. They attempted a local news/talk format with Jay Bailey as PD, though after little more than a year on-air I recall reading about benefits being cut and paychecks (and staff) bouncing. Eventually the station got sold. Any idea what Jay is up to these days?

The Common Outlets were killed by the Wrentham Premium Outlets, not really something that could have been prevented. Yes the track record is not the best, but there is a sense of optimism surrounding CitySquare, and it is by far the most effort that has been put into the city in a long time. Gentrification takes longer in some areas than others, and Worcester is no exception. And now, once it happens, WCRN will be around to cover it.

Since when were cities measured on the success of their airports? And there's a lot more to that story than what's said here... unless you were trying to prove than Manchester is a slice of heaven.
