Urban AC in Dallas/Ft. Worth

I know this is a tired subject, but oh well.

For the life of me, I will never understand why do we have two unsuccessful urban ac stations on two terrible frequencies. They play about the same thing: Tons and tons of old school music. Don't get me wrong. I respect the classics, but who want to hear the same twenty classics over and over? It would be nice if there was a difference between these two stations, but there's not. It would be nice if you could hear a equal amount of old and new r&b, but it would really nice to hear one good urban ac on a good signal, than two horrible ones on two horrible signals.

I'm done now...

Good points. The "classics" that are being played are usually regulated to the Motown lable and its subsidiaries, completely ignorning the Soul-Stax label and Atlantic-Cotillion. That's why you hear the same old ones Like "My Girl" upteen thousand times, and ignore the Barkays, plus Otis Redding's catalog for example. The "rimshot"sticks are all the owners can afford I am sure. If Infinity CC and Susquehana would actually pay attention,A true Classic R&B mixed with some new stuff could work instead of waiting for someone else to blink and copy that format if it's successful. Too many are too cautious to break out to do something innovative. "Jack" comes close but close is all it's got.

I remember when 100.3 was UAC (KRBV V100). Their shares weren't horrible. They were nothing like KMJQ is getting here in Houston, but they were decent. KRNB 105.7 has been all over the map, since coming on the air. There was a time when they were playing mostly slow jams. There was a time when they were only playing new R&B. There was a time when they were playing no new R&B. Their signal IS their biggest enemy. I was really hoping Service was going to get WRR from the City Of Dallas, but it didn't happen.

The big problem with the DFW market, is that there are SO MANY rimshot stations that a station with a bad signal, cannot upgrade, because there is no room on the dial.

I don't see Infinity trying it again, simply for the fact that it would take listeners away from KOAI (or so they'll spin it that way). Clear Channel could go in that direction if the "Sunny" thing doesn't evolve and start doing better. But, I think both companies would be inclined to go after the Hispanic demos, given the success of KESS.

Radio One, besides being a horrible company, their stations are not that good. I just listen to their stations and they all sound the same, even worse than Clear Channel stations... same music, same imaging, same promotions. I just can't listen to them for long periods of time. Although, I did listen to them more than I listened to KRNB last time I was up.

I agree with JamzUSA, it is frustrating that the market doesn't have a better option. I bitch a lot about Majic 102 here in Houston, but they are much better than the two stations in DFW. I actually prefer Soul 73 KKDA over both of KSOC & KRNB. <P ID="signature">______________
