Urban AC

I'd like to see one in Diego. The Black comp is 5-6% of the population, it seems a underperforming FM, while they won't get rich could make a nice 25-54 sell. And don't say XHRM fills that void because they're a latino targeted Killer Oldies thing, even if they do have a Black Gospel show on Sunday Mornings.

That 5% would still be fragmented. If the Urban AC was too current, many listeners would stick with XHRM. Also, I would imagine KIFM has a following among the adult black audience.

I can't think of one West Coast market with a successful Urban AC. It wouldn't work in San Diego. But I suppose if a station is really underperforming they may want to give it a try.

Ok,
Please explain to me how the music on an Urban AC would differ from XHRM? Are you saying that Magic92.5 is different from the station that was on 95.7 at first?

Two totally different formats. Magic plays R&B crossover gold mostly targted to second generation Hispancs. Urban ACs target the adult black community and mixes gold (including some decidedly non-crossover artists such as Franky beverly and Maze) with slow R&B currents from artists such as Musiq, Fantasia, and Tank. Urban AC is huge in markets with a large black population such as Detroit and Birmingham, but is a rare format in the Western U.S.

Do you think an Urban AC would pull some of KIFM and XHRM who listen to those stations by default? Perhaps they would pull some of the upper end of Z90 demos as well? There's no question the West Coast markets have had problems supporting UAC stations but I think one can be successful. What about one that leans more towards a Hot Urban AC? A little bit more currents than normal but still some strong golds and recurrents mixed in?

Nobody wants to work that hard for what is an extreme longshot.
