Urban is Hot on Internet Radio

The internet radio portal I use added a top 10 feature, the ten most listened to streams on their site. I was surprised to see that Urban dominates the list.

#1 was 1FM JAMZ. Other Urbans in the top 10 include 202 FM POWER, BIG R radio RNB, and HOTMIX radio Hip Hop. Also one OTA station showed up KWYB the VIBE Ventura Ca. Plus two jazz/smooth jazz stations hit the top 10.

Is it just this portal I use or is Urban especially popular on internet radio? If so is it dissatisfaction from over the air radio that causes Urban fans to search for alternatives on the internet?

Pretty much.

The record industry is completely out of touch with the Urban crowd, especially when it comes to Hip-Hop/Rap

I like alternative/Neo-soul & old soul and House. Here are myfavorites below:

BasementSoul

111EastNeo

AOL Neo

Black Soul Rythms Radio

Soul city radio

SwankSocietyRadio (My favorite they are Chicago oriented They play soul, rap, broken beat, house, etc) Once I caught a live Q-tip concert on the weekend.

Thanks for the shout-out, wdb. We're trying to give SoCal'ians (and the world) something they don't usually hear.

Incidentally, at this moment we just finished the new Saturday night version of Club 109 which is more of a rhythmic/dance mix from 8-10pm. Starting at 10pm we're bring back Touch (deep house).

XM, if you like those outlets you'd enjoy our shows - The Groove (Fri, 10pm-2am pst), The Afterparty (Sun 2am-6am) and The Lounge (Sun 6pm-12am).

Essentially, from 8pm Saturday until 12am Monday (sunday night) we have a variety of specialty programming.

Our TuneIn page now includes playlist and schedule information to give you an idea of our sound and programming: http://tunein.com/radio/VIBE-109-s140380/

It probably goes without saying that I see "Internet Radio" becoming more of a force in urban music, especially as a wider portion of the audience gets over the technology hump.

I just clicked on the top 10 link at the top of the Shoutcast website. That took me to some AOL website that has a list of the top 10 radio stations. There is a hip-hop and R&B "jams" station in the top 10.

Yahoo's Internet radio website has an R&B station at number 3, hip-hop at 6 and quiet storm at 10.

Various types of hip-hop, R&B and rhythmic music seem to have a strong presence on a lot of music websites. It's not just rock music everywhere.

Right now I'm listening to a hip-hop station from Norway. I haven't heard any Norwegian songs yet though. The format seems to be English language rhythmic with some reggaeton thrown in.
