And this is when Urban One has gotten a new branding.

https://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/165501/radio-one-changes-name-to-urban-one

Its previous name was called radio one and here's its quarterly statement

Marking the 18th anniversary of its IPO on MAY 5th, AFRICAN-AMERICAN-centric RADIO ONE, INC., is changing its name to URBAN ONE, INC., which will continue to provide "culturally relevant integrated content" through its various brands and platforms – TV ONE, RADIO ONE, REACH MEDIA, iONE DIGITAL and ONE SOLUTION.
Commented CEO ALFRED C. LIGGINS III, “More than 35 years ago, we proudly began representing Black culture by lifting our voices boldly, courageously and unapologetically. URBAN ONE's mission is to enhance and maintain our position as the largest distributor of urban content in the country.”
URBAN ONE reaches 82% of AFRICAN-AMERICANS with "high-quality, relevant urban content that reflects, acknowledges and pays homage to the BLACK culture that has impacted every fiber of AMERICAN life."

Somewhere along the line the phrase Urban was applied to African-Americans. But Urban means related to cities. It can be people of various races. And blacks can live in suburbs or rural areas. "Urban contemporary"... "Urban one"...

It can be done, you can super serve a particular audience and also be inclusive to others outside that audience as well. WKTU in the early 80s was a radio station that was truly for everyone even if they primarily served the Hispanics and Italians of the NYC metro. It was a party where everyone was invited.
