Urban radio flashback: Brandy “I Wanna Be Down”(1994)

This was a hit back in 1994-95. It peaked #6 on the Hot 100 and was #1 on the R&B in October 1994. It was played in heavy rotation at Power 106, The Beat and KJLH during that time.

Same here. I always loved Brandy material especially her earlier material from the mid 90’s. This song was also used on her sitcom “Moesha” back in January 1996. I was only a year old when this song dropped in September 1994.
 
Sorry bumping this year old thread but I’m currently listening to this song while I’m working. I did catch it in the mix on Power 106 back in November and was surprised because It’s been ages since I heard it on the station. I still hear it on KDAY, 94.7 The Wave and KJLH occasionally.
 
This was one of the songs that signaled the end of KKFR's (92.3 mHz, Phoenix, AZ) second go-round with white top-40. That second go-round had started in the spring of 1994 when KYOT-FM (95.5 mHz) dropped its CHR format for an automated quasi-oldies format it called "The Coyote." KKFR dropped playing the R&B/rap records and swooped in to try to take the top-40 audience that KYOT was losing. By the late summer of 1994, however, the writing was on the wall that that swoop wasn't working so KKFR reverted to a rap/hip-hop station in the fall with Brandy's "I Wanna be Down," becoming one of its most played songs.

Interestingly, when KKFR did its year-end countdown of the top 92 songs of 1994, the first two entries were a nod to its failed CHR bid that year that were still getting a lot of requests on a nightly basis; namely, Green Day's "Long View" (#92) and Offspring's "Come Out and Play," (#91). That would be the last time that either of those recordings would ever be heard on that station.

It was the #1 most played song on Power 106 LA in late 1994. It also was #1 at 92.3 The Beat during that time as well according to Billboard Airplay Monitor.
