<font color=3333ff>Across the country, Urban AC and Gospel stations are taking it to the top. And we can now see that Clear Channel has this city on LOCK! Wow is all I gotta say.

But it's GREAT to see Power get stomped on by the little station that could : )

Told yall that Hot aint goin nowhere....
I STILL say that Hot didn't need to change nothing. They shoulda stayed crunk. That pop ish aint all that in Memphis-10, as you can see now on a million-watt strong signal that's gettin crushed!

Re: Urban Ratings/Time to flip 98.9?

You know, it's tough to live as the 4th or 5th Urban. Can WMPW keep chugging along with less than a 3?* Hmmm...

So, one wonders, with all this talk of Jack (and I will leave the discussion of whether Jack is a viable, long-term format for another time -- the jury is still out, it seems), might it be that 98.9, not FM100 or 94.1, is the best candidate to make that flip?

Look at the facts. 98.9 is a problem child. In that format, if it's gonna happen, it typically happens pretty fast. 98.9 remains an "also-ran." Now, it is interesting that Citadel has no stations within the contemporary arena (and save the argument that 98.9 is "Dance/CHR." Look at it's web site; it ain't that). What better way to annoy/undermine the 500-pound billing gorillas of FM100 and WRVR by firing the SCUB missile of Jack at 'em?! And Citadel has the luxury of not hurting any of their other signals by doing it.

Sure. I understand the utility of having Power 98.9 for combo-selling with 103.5, but one has to wonder -- just how useful is this under-performing Hip-Hop station for Citadel as it sits?

So, Citadel flips 98.9. Immediately, this Jack (or Bob, or Jim, or Dave, or Whatever...) shaves a point or two off 'RVR and FM100. That has to be useful to those guys with the studios by the railroad tracks (chooo-chooooo). And, even if it begins to slide a year or two down the road, what are they out, anyway?!

But, you know, looking at the market as a whole, there are a number of under-performing signals. Something's gonna happen on one of them eventually.

Just a thought from the Dead Guy with the Sideburns.

Re: Urban Ratings/Time to flip 98.9?

If you've done any research on the current Jack stations around the country, you know that the Jack format is strongest in the male 35-44 demo. With that being said, a Jack in Memphis would hurt Rock 103 much more than WRVR or FM-100 which are pretty much female appeal stations.

Yet another reason why they might go with it. Hit 103 head on with Max and let Jack do a flanking attack.

Very interesting... you might be on to something.

The problem is, something about Memphis - everybody plays it safe. Too damn safe if you ask me.<P ID="signature">______________

Too Early to turn off the Power

I recall that on the Knoxville board, several people (especially the radio genius that is RadioPromoGirl) used to post similar things I'm seeing about Power in Memphis.

"Questioning why our company sticks with a station...(HOT 104.5) while they only bring in teen numbers? Besides being a catch 22 with Star in the same building....why dont they flip HOT and make some money.
Clearly WILD & STAR own the 18 to 34 numbers...bringing in lots of dough for both stations....Journal can't GIVE Hot away to advertizers. HOT is just really bad radio! Lump ass sucks....that guy they have in the afternoon should semi retire and be a Walmart greeter....

Lets turn this market up a notch...switch HOT to a format they can compete in!"

That was an actual post from around Easter 2004. Well, not only is HOT 104.5 still here (and so is the guy in afternoon drive), but WILD (which the genius that is/was RadioPromoGirl) went bye-bye on April 29th.

Perhaps the strategic plan that Power launched with was off the mark a bit. I'm almost never in Memphis so I don't know how any of the stations sound, but I'd think that Citadel would make some adjustments and stick with the station for at least a year before throwing in the towel.

I wish them good luck.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Too Early to turn off the Power

<font color=3333ff>It's also being run by a PD from Alaska that programmed Top 40 Mainstreams. Memphis is a tough, Southern market and needs to be understood, something that he does not. People tuned in to Power, got their "oh I aint heard that in a long time" and now are tuning back to thier normals saying "enough already."

Power's website is even weak, they don't even promote any jocks on it AND they are the only one that does not webcast. Seems like they are going on the fact that they have a blowtorch signal to carry the station instead of doing some real promotion.

Bring back Luscious Ice to M-10 and see what happens to Power 99 vs. Hot 1071.

Re: Too Early to turn off the Power

I agree that the PD seems out of touch with the market (to be fair, his previous stations were Rhythmic Top 40, not mainstream, but true point that they are a far different beast than Memphis). I don't think he really grasps the polarized nature of the market - this ain't neverland, where da black folk and white folk join hands and sing in harmony. The hip-hop audience is still seen as mainly black - I know white suburban kids are listening and buying, but the image is still very divisive in the city (yes, I live here and know). Plus, word from inside the "Power house" on Murray Road is that he is not the most popular guy in the building, from sales to promotions to programming.

Don't know that Luscious Ice would be the answer - his tenure in the market was kinda incomplete (but he was at Flinn, which can only be tolerated for so long anyway). Competition can be presented - Cagle did it at Hot, and Devin, Boogaloo and Luscious (to an extent) carried on against K97. I just dont think Flinn has the committment to really make a run at K, so Power may be the best chance, if they find a real leader who can work the streets without sounding like a clone of Hot.

Time will tell, but coming up on the first full year in market, with a strong signal and national players backing it - Power is on the clock and better step it up soon.

<font color=3333ff>Well said JW.... and yep I forgot about Cagle & Devin @ Hot..... ahhh them were the dayz : )

I'm sure Devin is happier at K, but he did have a great run with Hot back then.

Re: Too Early to turn off the Power

Yeah, Cagle, Devin, Boogie, Doc Martin, Kid Fresh, Jay Knight, a solid Promo Director in Jeff Lyons(Mo is tight there now too). They gave K a good run, and damn near passed them at one point (I think it was in mid to late 1999). A shame that the Powers that Be at Flinn couldnt give them the firepower to stay competitive and happy. But Hot seems to be getting its feet back under itself and holding firm. Power still could fight, but they have missed the mark on carrying the initial interst from the launch.
