I'm pretty sure they didn't "steal" Lew D.
The jury is still out on the rest of that stuff. But I do like what I am hearing on HOT.
And, I like the fact that we finally have some competition back in Lubbock.
Z102 is Z102, that's all it needs to be, that's all it will ever be (unless someone decides otherwise).
AND SPEAKING OF Z102
It occured to me the other day, that the only thing that would force a change at Z102 (in my opinion only) is if another station were to pick a neutral name (something with a letter) and begin selling advertising. Essentially, Z102 does not need to beat any other stations in any slots because of their established name. They can just go back to the same businesses and say "we are the general pop station in Lubbock," and business owners feel safe buying from them. It is in selling air time where I suspect Z102 has the least comeptition.
I'm not saying that Mix does not sell well (because I don't know), but think about it, what does a name like "mix" say to people? They think of office music, or "the 50/50 Mix of 80's and 90's" from when 100.3 was AC, and that's not a threat to Z102. But say somone were to be "Q100.3" or "B-100"? That's a neutral name. Somebody can go to the same businesses Z102 does and say "we have the same format that Z102 has, but we're new, and so we reach a bigger audience," etc. Using a letter like "Z" or "Q" or even "B" for a radio station name allows them the anonymity to claim to have a more general audience that businesses may wish to advertise too.
Just a thought...
