Urban

Is Minneapolis ready for a full-fledged, commercial urban-formatted station yet? B96 is rhythmic. What does the urban adult crowd listen to?

Urban AC listeners probably listen to satellite or internet radio to get their R&B fix (is cable WRNB-FM still around?).

It's a shame that Minneapolis-St. Paul, with such a rich R&B/Rhythmic music heritage from Prince, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (producers of Janet Jackson, New Edition, SOS Band, Human League, Alexander O'Neal, Cherrelle, Herb Alpert, Karyn White, etc.), the Peterson family and others, doesn't have some sort of Urban adult/Rhythmic AC to call its own. The old Groove 105 came close, but had crap signals. Their signal isn't the best, but if Radio One were smart, they'd leave the CHR/Rhythmic/Hip-Hop stuff to KDWB and chart its own course with something rhythmic adult.

I could see a rhythmic urban AC station doing well. You would need to have your Jammin' Oldies songs sprinkled in there as well, I think, to survive, along with your true urban AC titles. Without the JO songs, it'll be tough considering the areas relatively small African-American poplutation.

Skip the Jammin' Oldies...they didn't work on Groove and I don't think they'll work on a Rhythmic AC. No Bee Gees, Donna Summer, KC & the Sunshine Band...that stuff is poison.

I don't buy the "small Black population" stuff...there are plenty of general market listeners who dig Prince, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Alicia Keys, Usher, Luther, Al Green, Anita Baker and more.

Groove? When was it Groove? I remember V105......

"KMOJ is a non-comm, with a horrible signal and subpar programming."

All true, but musically would this station not fit the definition of Urban.

Also the signal is not so horrible that it can't be heard throughout the metro, especially in the places where an Urbran format should get the best response.

Agreed. KMOJ is a heritage station for Minneapolis and fills the urban ac niche as well as it needs to be served. I don't honestly think a urban ac would pull in more than a 1.0. SJ didn't do so well in Minneapolis so I certainly don't think it would support an urban ac.
The Twin Cities has never been much in the way of urban radio. B96 pulls in only mediocre ratings for a rhythmic/CHR and now that it has been sold the TC's might lose commercial urban radio all together
