US House defeats bill to delay digital TV transition

Good. I hope the bill stays dead. I am not unsympathetic to those who use analog over-the-air TV, but folks the spoon feeding will have to stop at some point. If we delay it until June, the same complaints about people being unprepared will come up again then. This has been publicized for 24 months now. Let's just bite the bullet and get it over with. Thank you Republicans for putting this one to bed.

Why the rush to shut it off? Let's shut off digital till they can make the signals work the same as analog.

You're for taking away TV from poor people that can afford cable, so we can give it to rich people who want to have wireless intenet devices and MORE cell phones.

First responders don't need the spectrum, they could simply take it away from the cell phone users.

I agree TV isn't a necessity but it's MORE of a necessity than a cellphone.

No one short of a brain surgeon needs to have a cellphone, sure it's nice if you're stranded on the highway but we managed to cope for decades just fine.

I had a feeling this was bound to happen. Plus its already too late to put on the brakes for the TV stations anyway. Their best hopes is to issue the coupons to consumers who buy the converters even if or after the 2-17-09 conversion takes place.

That really depends on the person. Sure, grandma who doesn't leave the house doesn't need a cell phone, but for people who travel extensively I would think a cell phone is more important.

I'm glad the bill was rejected. As someone else said, the TV transition has been advertised for almost two years now. In the majority of cases it is likely procrastination on the consumer's part if they still don't have a converter box. If the transition gets postponed until June we're going to be in the exact same place then as we are now.

I'm happy the delay got shot down but I'm wondering whether the Republicans voted as they did for technical/business reasons or just to try to embarrass Obama.

I say if they are not ready for the switch to DTV and their TV does not work, They can always read a Book! LOL ;)

Sonehow it won't surprise me if there is some compromise date settled on, which will probably be another random date that makes no sense.

Im glad it is finally going to happen and no delay. Local TV stations finally get to shut off their analog signal. And now they can use that money in their budget for something much more useful then have to power to signals. Thats one big plus right their.

I'm glad the switch off date is still February 17th. People knew about the date, there was countless ads for the DTV transition, and it was suppose to happen two years ago.

My bedroom TV is a Sayno 15 inch LCD Enhance Definition TV. The TV tuner is analog. I went out to Walmart pick up a Magnavox Converter Box. Connect the Converter Box using RCA cables to the TV, and then connect the Reflective FM Antenna from C Crane Radio to the converter box. Oddly enough the reception is better than using a UHF/VHF passive antenna.

My living area have an LCD HDTV using a bow tie antenna. I'm glad that I'll be watching the Super Bowl in uncompress HD signal. In full 1080i.

As I think robmadden1 is trying to say, it is still very likely the transition will be delayed. They're almost certain to vote on this again next week, and when they vote again they will only require a simple majority, as opposed to the 2/3 majority required this week. Since the bill came only two votes short of reaching a 2/3 majority, it is nearly certain it will pass if only 1/2 is required.

Then again, nobody thought it was going to fail the 2/3 majority...

And then again again... something like 400 stations have already indicated they plan to sign off their analogs on 2/17 even if Congress allows them to leave them on later.

A previous poster made the comment that it'll be the little old people that will mostly be lost viewers by the switch to digital, either due to confusion or lack of $$$ to buy a converter due to living on a very fixed income. When I sold cable TV service, some of the best customers were the ones who had never had cable and got whatever they could from the air. The channels they received and the reception of them changed with the seasons meaning when the leaves went away reception got better. The cable company gave me leeway to offer free installs if I felt they would become at least "lifeline" customers for the forseeable future. That alone got many folks without cable to sign up. I recall one little old couple who lived at the very end of road where the cable ended just one phone pole away from them that were so happy to have more than two snowy channels to choose from. They decided that they could afford the "basic" cable charges if they got the free install and watched their budget. I think they were the happiest clients I had.
