US Networks pluck Canada for primetime programming

Talk about overdue...

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Nets pluck Canucks for primetime

The prolonged writers strike had triggered a serious look by the U.S. broadcasters into local series in the top English-language markets -- Canada, the U.K. and Australia -- reversing a decades-long programming flow in the other direction.

Canadian series are considered more accessible to U.S. audiences. They also provide the networks -- whose pipeline had dried up because of the strike -- with some much-needed original scripted series.

I hope this is just the start. It would be nice if the cable nets followed suit; they can seek programs no longer airing which have never aired stateside. Tv will, once again, be fun to watch.

I hope someone shows "Little Mosque on the Prairie." Bonus points if it causes outrage and stations refuse to air it.

Show's great; I've seen some episodes and would love to see more.

No! Then they'll end up pulling it off of PBS! I make a point of watching it every week.

The show is indeed a gem, but it really seems to require an existing understanding of Islam and what it's like to be a Muslim in North America. Generally speaking: Canadians, even non-Muslims, seem to comprehend this a lot better than Americans. I think this show's humor is just way over the heads of the masses targeted by US broadcast television.

Absolutely correct!

The only network which this program would ever fit in to is Bravo.

The only PBS affiliate around here in Central Florida that was carrying it (WCEU) canned it a few months ago. I really enjoyed watching that funny show. Corner Gas and The Red Green Show are two personal favorites. I could easily see RGS on a MyNetwork TV affiliate, even if picked up by syndication. WGN picking up Corner Gas was awesome.

Where I live, two PBS stations carry it... Blue Ridge Public TV airs it at 10 & 10:30PM Friday, and WCVE in Richmond airs it at 10:30PM Saturday.

If they go get programs from Australia, please get the Highway Man, starring Jacko from those Energizer commercials. Ok, maybe not. But I never get to use that reference, so if I get a chance, I use it

I wish they'd pipe in the Great White North 2/4 celebration starring SCTV vets Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas. Yeah, it was a one off, but reportedly there is a very funny appearance by ex-Canadian PM Paul Martin...though I guess ya have be from Canada to get it...

I'm starting to watch "Corner Gas" on WGN. Having traveled up there off and on for years, its pretty funny and accurate.

Thank you , neighbors.

...is it actually possible that we could see a revival of You Can't Do That on Television? ;D

MOOSE!

Yes, she and Lisa "Motormouth" Ruddy made a great team back in the day.

I doubt that the producers (or anyone else for that matter) will ever revive that show, not to mention bringing the episodes to DVD, thanks to bad blood between all parties involved, including Nickelodon and CTV.

However, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ABC Family to pick up "Sophie," but I feel that this comedy would be better suited for ABC. If this show was paired up with "Samantha Who?" on the network schedule, ABC would have a strong winner with this combo.

Hey, give Jacko a reality show, I'm sure he needs the money (or whatever currency it is they use down under)...

"Get Energizer! OY!" ;D

Considering that he's a popular Australian Football star there, I imagine money's the least of his problems. I think the main reason why Jacko got the Energizer and Highwayman gig is that Australia was "in" in the late-1980s, and they wanted someone to be as just a big star in America as Paul Hogan. Didn't work.

Actually, "Oy" is spelled "Oi" -- that's how Aussies say "Hey!".
