US Open men delayed to Monday...five years in a row. Effects on syndication?

Once again we see the US Open get yet another weather delay for the fifth straight year, something that was a foregone conclusion this morning as the rain moved in and the men in the semifinal had to dodge around court furniture in swirling winds. ::) (insert rant of getting them a roof there or having the finals at MSG already after so darned long here) And once again, we get another Monday afternoon men's final, and syndication's usual debut day gets affected again via CBS eating up those four hours after 4pm ET.

Last year they knew about the delays earlier in the week, so everyone moved their show premieres up a day. Late Saturday is not going to be so easy to cut new promos or reschedule things. The morning-targeted shows will be fine, but Jeff Probst and Katie Couric (less so there because it's a mainly ABC-carried show) will have to proceed as normal with their launch or else it'll be odd to see a weak-testing episode, while Dr. Oz, who has been breathlessly promoting his new weight loss plan to premiere Monday may need to be shifted for sure, along with Dr. Phil's George Zimmerman-focused show which has heavy CBS carriage.

This is going to be another mess, and with this year's Tuesday coming on the 11th (not exactly a day to be all peppy and 'whooo watch my show we're gonna have funnnn!'), I'm wondering how this is going to be pulled off with all these shows.

Madison Square Garden hasn't been an option for the last two summers, as it has been undergoing an extensive renovation during the hockey and basketball off-seasons. And there's no other indoor arena in New York City that could hold the event (at least until the Brooklyn arena known as Barclays Center opens Nov. 1).

You know what, it's just one day...ONE DAY. CBS made a commitment to the USTA and they've got to fulfill it. I realize that these stations put in a lot of time, effort, and money into promoting these season and series premieres. But the stations knew this could happen and hopefully have made/will make contingency plans, even if it means blowing off the syndicated programs and (at least in the eastern half of the country, news and maybe access) if the match runs long.

As for Tuesday, I expect it to be business as usual with no special programming interrupting daytime...except in NYC, where the stations here are again broadcasting the ceremony of the reading of victims' names (no disrespect, but I personally think that time has passed).

folks in Minneapolis will be pissed as it will pre-empt Dr Phil and Ellen...oh no!!!

Thats why god invented DVR's...to record them at 12:35 & 1:35AM ;)

They could preempt their .2 programming on their sub channel with regularly scheduled .1 programming.

Alisha Tyler from The Talk just announced that show's season premiere is bumping up to Tuesday instead because of definite Pacific pre-emptions. Also just checked the Dr. Phil show page; repeat on Monday for sure, the Zimmerman hype moves to Tuesday. Dr. Oz is proceeding with his planned show on Monday.

that doesnt work with an O&O...no subchannels
and what do you do in the case of a place like Mankato where .2 is Fox and has the new Judge Judy episodes?

If a station has a .3, then if there's enough bandwidth set aside for the .3 channel, then the pre-empted programming could go there. I know in Chicago, The Talk, Jeff Probst, Dr. Phil, & Judge Judy get affected, & might just air in the overnight hours, or the new season programming gets pushed back a day on WBBM-TV. For now, they have no subchannels. As for CBS affiliates that do have subchannels, they have the option of moving those shows to the .2 or .3, depending on what is on those channels. If any of them are programmed locally, it's a possibility the shows could air on those subchannels. If a subchannel is another network like Fox, ABC, NBC, or CW, then that's more difficult, since they usually have syndicated programming already programmed for those channels.

There's been discussion about moving the semifinals back a day - Ladies on Thursday, Gentlemen on Friday, just like Wimbledon. This probably adds fuel to the fire. CBS notwithstanding, the USTA should try to finish the Open on Sunday if they can.

As to the lid, give them five years. Armstrong and Ashe are due to be rebuilt anyway.
