US STEEL HOUR, PLAYHOUSE 90, ARMSTRONG CIRCLE THEATER

Talk about some forgotten gems. Does anyone know the scoop on what happened to these shows? Seems they were never used in syndication and yet they produced some quality television. I believe Armstrong Circle Theater was a filmed presentation and the other two either live or maybe taped. Were the recordings destroyed or maybe only kinescopes available?

Can't tell you for certain what's available; I know that the
"U.S. Steel Hour" presentation of "No Time For Sergeants"
with Andy Griffith, from 1955, has aired on kinescope on
some PBS stations; likewise, some years ago a CBS executive
in Los Angeles found the kine of the "Playhouse 90" production
of "Requiem For A Heavyweight" with Jack Palance, from 1956.
So there may be more at the networks; I heard several years
ago that there's a large treasure trove of "Studio One" kines in
a Westinghouse warehouse in Pittsburgh.

Your best bet for many of these classic presentations is probably
the film versions; TCM frequently airs the movie versions of "No
Time For Sergeants" and "Requiem For A Heavyweight" (with Anthony
Quinn instead of Jack Palance), and "Marty" often turns up on cable
as well.

Unfortunately, much of NBC's material, including live plays, operas, and
variety shows such as Berle's, Caesar's, and Steve Allen's, were destroyed
years ago; only by the quick thinking of an NBC employee was "You Bet
Your Life" saved and rerun in the '70s.

I've been seeing on this Internet TV channel from Britian, Nostalgia TV Plus, an Armstrong Circle Theater episode "The Bells of Cockainge" with Vaughn Taylor, Gene Lockhart and James Dean..Originally aired on November 17, 1953..

Nostalgia TV Plus shows a lot of Public Domain material, though they repeat a lot of episodes (Just now showed Burns and Allen-I believe the Pilot episode-followed by Amos & Andy)

The Museum of Broadcast Communications site (from Chicago) has lots of ARMSTRONG CIRCLE THEATER episodes in their "TV Drama" archives. Many of these are videotape masters with original commericals, and run 60 minutes each.
Registry is required.

Cool!!!!!!!!!!
Makes me think of the days when my family first got cable. I was about 15 then, and I did nothing but sit and watch WKBD all summer. This would have been 1967 or so.
I guess after rereading my last reply in this thread, I could have asked a littel nicer, and said please. but because you were so prompt in replying, Tim L, here is one for you. Everyone els too! Check out:
http://www.cirtusfiles.com
There you will find shows like Ben Casey, and 77 Sun Set Strip.
They play in Flash, so you should be able to watch them with no problem.

Michael:
Your link doesnt work for me but thanks..
I wasnt sure how much to say because it is more advanced than just dialing up one channel..TVU does have an IPod Touch app for a few bucks that eliminates between-show modern commercials..

It is absolutely incredible, some of the things Nostalgia TV Plus
is showing! I didn't know there were any episodes of the Frank
Sinatra or Pinky Lee shows available. That Sinatra show, being
nearly an hour long, must be from his early-'50s CBS series (the
1957-58 ABC one was only 30 minutes).

I wonder, though, if they'll get any complaints about showing
"Amos 'n' Andy."

Not likely, we are much smarter and wiser now.

Not neccessarily..Remember, the channel appears to be based in Great Britian, where some attitudes always have been more progressive..Plus, except for TV geeks that care to seek things like TVU Networks out, it's not likely that most Americans even know of this channel, or the platform that it originates on..

ALL The PLAYHOUSE 90 episodes exist, although some of the ones recorded on VT only exist as kines.

A Few years ago, CBS inventoried them, and transfered them to modern video formats for possible future use.

All the filmed episodes of PLAYHOUSE 90 also exist, and in fact were packaged and syndicated in a movie package by Screen Gems Television.

The bulk of STUDIO ONE episodes exist, as well as most of the Kinescope G.E. THEATER episodes.

Not sure about the status of some of the other live anthology series.
