USA Radio Network News Dallas

USA Radio Network News is letting all staffers go in Dallas - except one. This is rumored to be happening one week from Sunday.

I'm not sure which is worse -- the news delivered with way too much Texas accent on USA or the extremely content-deprived and crackpot-book selling newscasts on IRN. The late Mr. Maddoux had an idea that may have been ahead of its time -- conservative-tinged news -- but he didn't have Mr. Murdoch's touch to pull it off. Most of USA's content was undistinguished IMO, particularly its newscasts. I wonder if consolidation and the Salemization of Christian radio sucked away a lot of USA's affiliates over the years...

Information radio Network News is headed by Dr. Larry bates and his son Chuck. They tout that Larry is one of hte "world leading economists" ( false) ,truth be told no one and I MEAN NO ONE has heard of him on any financial network, mercantile exchanges, etc. He is a worlds best book seller ( Only on his IRN SITE..he never has made a "credible Book list" His title of "Dr." is an honorary one given to him by a small college outside of Oakridge ,Tennessee. HE "is a former Tennessee state LEGISLATOR" ..appointed by a former Gov. to fill an unexpired term and he failed to be elected outright to the post. That Governor by the way was indicted for selling pardons and paroles years back.
His son Chuck "is a former advisor to the President of the United States" He was a county Republican chairman in Tennessee helping George Bush Sr. get re-elected and wrote one welcoming speech.

They have called the following Presidential Candidates " Obama Bin Laden" Hillary chillary Clinton.and John McPain.

Now this is what kills me, recently they have bounced checks to several
stations that carry their show "News and Views". How could a "world's leading economist" do that? or buy another network?

They also claimed that in 1996(?) TWA Flight 800 that crashed off of Long Island "was shot down by a Syrian missile" Didn't know Syria had subs this close to the U.S. or had any subs. John McCain faked his own capture as a POW in Vietnam.. Plus President Clinton secretly ordered students to be shot at Columbine High school to divert media attention from his own problems.

Yes sir, Larry Bates and Chuck Bates make Art Bell appear to be a Rhodes Scholar. They also got busted for selling a chemcial via the internet that would increase your gas mileage call "X-Big Oil.com" It was comprised of elements that make mothballs. which gummed up engines.
The furloughed USA employees ,God Bless them but they are better off if they believe in being journalists.

I hope this isn't true...I've got a lot of pals over there who sure don't deserve this. There was a rumor that ABC Radio (or fill in the ____________, L.L.C.) was going to buy USA, but I guess that's not an option now. Word I've heard since Lester Maddoux passed on is that his kids and wife don't know sh!t about running the operation, and have done it on the cheap(er) ever since...even bringing in a supposed radio expert to take the reins, only to have it handed back to them in worse shape than it was.

Ya know, if you can't sell ads in an election season, the layoffs should be starting with the SALES team. At least they let the crew get through the holidays without this looming over their heads.

I bet the memo said that the layoff would "make them stronger Christians."

What I remembered the most about these crackpots was their almost PSYCHOTIC hatred of Bill Clinton during his presidency, coming up with every single conspiracy theory you could imagine and fanning the flames of all the others that other right wing nutjobs put out there. And don't EVEN get me started on Y2K. These guys milked that for all it was worth and then SOME...even AFTER Y2K ("It's not over yet....")

USA Radio Network, Dionne and her Psychic Friends, Y2K, Art Bell....how did we ever survive that decade with our sanity?....

Yep.. Its true.. We're all looking for new gigs next week. Lucky me, I was already moving back to Arkansas any way.

As for USA's views on things, i've touched on that bit before. Let's just say I had a real problem with a lot of the things I had to read over the years.

PD

Hang in there PittDave. You are doing the right thing. Working for the Bates goes against anything of journalistic integrity. As I pointed out, they have embellished to the extreme their credentials. I like to know where they get their money considering they do not run many ads at all. "Endtime ministries" in Garland has ties to them as well, and if you truly want to hear crackpots ,especially one co-host who sounds like Casey Kassem doing his "Robin" voice ,you should turn in. I have some colleagues who work at USA as well, and this is a slap in th face to them.
Oh one more thing about "DR". Larry Bates. When he is on a speaking engagement, and does his show "on location". its actually a blue box phone in. They call it their 'IRN MOBILE STUDIOS". They profess to be hard core Christian, but as one can plainly see they stray from the facts and truth.

I don't post often, but, I felt compelled to respond to this one as I do Saturday's at USA. I feel for the folks who've put in over 2 decades there and are now being unceremoniously dumped with 1 week notice and nothing but unused vacation pay. All it means to me is that I get my Saturdays back to spend with family. I looked at the website for International and it's downright scary. Granted, the news at USA was slanted, but these guys are just downright whacko. They have a commentary on the website that claoms that all democrats are reprobates and are all evil with no right to live in this country. I have commited to the last two Saturdays, but, I'll be damned if I won't actually do news.....By the way....I learned about the whole thisng right here on the boards....nobody at USA bothered to call and let me know what was going on. Since I have two other P/T jobs here in DFW radio, it's no big shakes for me......but, for some, it's going to be devastating.

I was saddened to learn about the USA/IRN situation earlier today. For those USA staffers who are losing jobs, our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

The late Marlin Maddoux, who started USA Radio in 1985, also started the Point of View radio talk show. I worked at a station that carried POV on a cassette tape because
we didn't have a satellite dish at the time.

I believe Mr. Maddoux was a man of integrity and probably would have closed his network before merging with an organization that lacks integrity or professionalism.
I don't see a bright future ahead for USA at this point.

God's best to you all who are affected by this.

The "repro"Bates (Larry and Chuck) have also called Democrats "Socialists". The other twist on history from them is....The attack on The Cole was planned by Al Gore so he would be elected to fight these extremists. Didn't know a VP had this much power. One poster commented on how some talk show hosts were like Josef Goebbels who was Propaganda Minister for Nazi Germany. The "Bates" apparently have studied him well. I don't have a personal axe to grind against these guys personally, but I do caution anyone having dealings with them. They play loose with facts as I demonstrated, they never allow a conflicting viewpoint be heard without a barrage of interruption ,and if the opposing parties interrupt them they get on to them and hang up.
Larry Bates holds seminars under the banner "The impending downfall of economic disorder" and tries to get paid attendees to buy his two books, (which ARE NOT BEST SELLERS) plus to buy his "XBigoil.com" gas additive that wil lscrew up your engine. He has vested interest in Citgo btw a Venzuelan company.

So there ya go folks another fine result of what derregulation and consolidation hath wrought.

Wow these Bates people sound scary and are extremists. As another extremist once said..."they are responsible for sending millions to hell because of their mis-interpetation and misuse of the Bible"

Gosh, Huey, I read your posts and can't help but wonder...did you try (and obviously fail) to get a job with IRN? Wonder why.

And, while you're at it, how about some concrete, published and verifiable facts to back your various statements (complete with creative grammar and spelling) up? Or is that too much trouble?

Having heard an IRN newscast driving scanning through stations in Montgomery, AL several years ago--I tend to believe what Huey is saying. (And to think I give Fox News grief.) IRN is pure garbage--the Genesis Radio folks have more credibility.

Why is it when you harshly criticize a merger,a corporate change in format, etc...you always get one of these questions hurled in rebuttal of about applying and not getting a job at the object of the original criticism? It displays a dominant symptom of the telecom act mental illness:lack of individuality creativity, and originality.
Time for the standard reply" No I didn't work there. No I never applied for a job there...my IQ is a lot higher than what they are seek and employ.

Now are you a fan of IRN? Did you come over from The Tennessee board to defend IRN? If so,fine. However that is like Davey Crockett calling Santa Anna a drinking buddy.

Hey Hueys Long. (I figure if you can't bother spelling my screen name correctly, why should I?)

Wow, very deep reference with the Santa Anna thing. That must've taken some time to write. Likewise doing a search on me and seeing that I post on Tennessee boards. What you didn't take time to do, of course, was answer my question. Which is to provide any credible (not just "'cause I said so") evidence to back up any of your statements.

There's a great deal of courage in hiding behind an anonymous screen name and blasting people you don't know and a company you don't have the slightest bit of insight into, and pretending to be much smarter than you really are. You might have also run into a term now and then, in the course of your vast radio experience. It's called "slander."

Thank you for confirming your employment and association. BTW your comment about anonymous names is kinda ironic since you yourself use one. Thank you for also showing former USA radio network employees the caliber of what is taking away their jobs. Lastly the proof was in the content of their broadcasts, especially "News and Views" and WITHIN the
IRN establishment. It's nice to know folks in Memphis, especially reporters. I am not about to out them. Tell the Bates, you tried. Have a good day "Eggs".

I have worked for a syndicated talk show on the weekend as a co-host and at times as host, and we have used IRN for the top of the hour news, and I am here to tell you that it is pretty worthless, and during an election year, I am going to start wondering if some of the candiates might take some legal action for the "OPINIONS" in a news cast that are being offered by news anchors and not what their job actually is... which is tell the news and offer sound bites of news makers... but they wish to embelish a bit during the cast with some opinion... quite disturbing... .and since I am former USA NETWORK employee, I wish all of those who are loosing their jobs, the very best of luck in finding something soon!

Just a thought!

Since we're all in the mood for fair questioning: Just what specific problems did you have with Huey's assessment of IRN Radio or its personalities? You complained about his complaints, inviting the inquiry as to whether or not you yourself believe that IRN has been unfairly characterized. If there's truly another side, don't hold it back.

I`m surprised Salem (based in Dallas like USA) didn't make a run at USA. Both networks are similary formatted (news/talk with a conservative bent) & I doubt a merger between them would've taken much effort, especially as far as relocating people/operations out of city/state. ???
