USB 2.0 extenders

Been a while since I researched these...Has anyone attempted to use these cheap USB extenders available on Ebay that claim you can put up to 328' of CAT5 cable between the adapters and get USB peripherals to work at that distance? Last time I messed with these things, they claimed about 150' and they were reliable to perhaps 50-60', iffy from maybe 75-100' and never did work at all at 150'. Handy item for the money but only of they actually work.

The last I knew about USB is that they are very impatient devices. They expect a response so quickly that any lengthy cable has too much delay.

Sitting here in the living room with a keyboard, mouse, and a 30 GB Flash-Voyager on a Cables Unlimited USB-1370 USB Over Cat5e Extender back to the computer. Only about 60' of CAT-5 used for this setup. The current model is the "USB-1375".
Works OK but seems a bit sensitive to static discharge or the igniter on the furnace! PC finds everything in the living room again after a few seconds.

I cannot tell you if my extender is 1.1 or 2.0 but..... I wanted to have a keyboard and mouse about 80 feet from the computer at times. The set I bought (at Frys) claimed it would work out to 192 feet!!! ( 192 max... but not 200 feet????)

Cables were available in 50 foot or 100 foot versions so I bought the 100 foot CAT 6 and tried it out without every taking it out of the ties and product tags. It worked great so I snaked it through the attic and through a wall to the downstairs area of the house. The extra 20 feet of cable lays there in the attic sleeping as best I can tell. ;D

The only hic-up I have had was a couple of weeks ago. Being slightly on the old side, I wanted a keyboard that was more like the original PC keyboards which means the keys have mechanical action and touch and noise like the manual typewriters some of honed our skills on. Recently I picked up a 20 something year old DELL "clickety clack" keyboard and added a little dongle to to convert from PS2 to USB. When I hooked that up with the receiver from a wireless mouse it apparently needed too much current which brought the voltage down and the mouse became very erratic which is a problem when doing tedious editing in Photoshop. Now I have a Logitec wireless keyboard and mouse (MK520) sharing ONE wireless receiver and everything works very, very well... at 100 feet. (The 520 is not shabby when it comes to key actions with some fingertip feedback.)

But to die for is my new Razer Blackwidow keyboard sitting about 18 inches from the computer. Discipline in returning to my keyboard habits and styles! (Can you imagine a library or a Starbucks with 40 or 50 people sitting around with clickety-clack keyboards like this one. I'm sure that would violate some zoning ordinance.)

If I were to use one, it would be for a USB 2.0 camera. That's what I had good luck to about 50-60' with in the past and would like to be able to use at a greater distance.

Sorry I forgot to mention I've got an IOGear powered USB 4-way hub at the far end. That powers everything for the most part. Even charges the camera.

I have read that the cables with a hub on the end actually boost the voltage for long cable runs, as opposed to straight extension cables. I need a run of about 35' for USB and HDMI for a setup I am contemplating. It's either that or a 35' run of firewire.

I only extend USB 1.1 devices. I would never be able to 'trust' a high speed device through one of these things. It's just the IT guy in me.

I have done some long extensions for 1.1 devices (keyboard and mice) without trouble.

If you 'have' to do this. I would try placing the powered hub somewhere in the middle if possible to repeat...

Let me be the first: What USB device do you want to use the extender for?

A USB 2.0 webcam for security. For the money, the quality runs circles around IP cams but I don't want to have a separate computer at each point I wish to monitor, therefore the wish to have longer USB runs.

I'm pretty sure you're prone for trouble with an extender...
This might be a stupid question but have you considered a wifi cam?

Have never played with one of those. If it has a wi-fi "docking unit" that plugs into a USB port at the computer and emulates a directly connected USB camera, that might be a compatible option...especially if they make them outside of the 2.4ghz band which is pretty packed at this location.

You can create such a thing (sort of) yourself with a simple usb-wifi stick...
