USDTV

I have noticed that in the last 24 hours USDTV.com has been down? Are they truely having tech troubles or is it all over for USDTV?

USDTV filed chapter 7 bankruptcy. They're trying to get financing and a buyer to stay in business. They blew through $26 million dollars in capital that was invested last year by several large media companies. They have only 16,000 subscribers to show for all the advertising they've done.

I would be surprised if this service continues much longer.

A service that charges $20 for only 12 channels is not going to last long. Dish Network's family package carries at least 30 channels for that price.

Also, they claim to carry local channels, but they actually are pointing viewers to the digital transmitters of the local stations themselves.

The channels they do carry come only from those who are partners. They are ABC/Disney (ESPN 1 & 2, Lifetime, Disney Channel), News Corp. (Fox News), EW Scripps (HGTV, Food Network, and Discovery Holdings (Discovery, TLC).

Anybody who currently subscribes to USDTV is a idiot. Anyone who buys the company is an idiot, unless they only plan to charge no more than $5 a month for the service. USDTV is a rip-off.

Personally, ESPN would be the "straw" that broke USDTV's "back" -- the price it charges them to carry ESPN and ESPN2 make up the bulk of the $19.95 monthly fee. If it wasn't for ESPN, USDTV could've offered more channels, space permitting.

I think the biggest problem for USDTV is the expensive hardware you have to buy for the service. I read they were working to add DVR and VOD functions to the set top box. I think they should have started with those services and offered the device for a lot less then they were.
