Use to be's don't matter anymore

Once upon a time the standard was set for quality radio broadcasting. You had dj's with deep booming voices. Like the late Jay Stone, Ernie Anderson, Chuck Riley....etc. Today the corporate run station will put anyone who is warm, breathing, can spell their name and has a SS#. Can someone please answer why has the bar been lowered and sub-par standards practiced? ::) ::) ::)

Money.

Radio is no longer run by broadcasters. The people running radio companies today have forgotten who their customer truly is- the listener, NOT the advertiser. It's amusing to watch the powers that be in a panic over declining revenues. Been here, done it many times but in the past there was no wholesale firings of staff to make the bottom line look better. Budgets were tightened to be sure but not at the expense of the on-air product. Now, the on-air product doesn't matter. Quality programming doesn't matter. Maybe some company will wake up and get it and the rest will follow the leader as they all seem to do now.

Hope things come full circle and we return to personality radio in CT

Also, so many of the smaller stations which have served as training grounds for up-and-coming broadcasters over the years are no more--- and if they are still around, they're likely running syndicated or voice-tracked programming instead a live, local personnel. IMHO the industry is shooting itself in the foot.

A deep booming voice does not necessarily make a broadcaster great. I've heard plenty of "RADIO VOICES" who are just that...no warmth, no personality and can only talk AT the listener..they are in love with their own voices. No thanks. :p

Radio is all about voice and personality. The voice is very important. No one wants to listen to someone with a raspy voice or too high pitched. Voice inflection is important as well.
I worked at a station way back when (don't wanna date myself ::)) where the Production Director would only use a non "on air" voice in a dire emergency. That included sales people.
However, today anything goes.

True. The smaller stations and smaller markets were much like baseball's farm system. It used to matter if you had large/major market experience, now there are people on the sir in top 10 markets who wouldn't have been able to be a board op 15 years ago.
