Using a voice coach?

Being a "radio" guy, I've seem to have run into a brick wall attempting further my career in the VO business.
Would anyone recommend a voice coach?
Pro and cons?
What to look for?
What to watch out for?
I know it would cost money, but what would be a fair deal or rate?
What do you think?
Is it worth it in the long run?

Not knowing what you sound like, but since you've been in radio and have done VO work in the past (as what I gather from your post), I'd suggest maybe an agent before a voice coach. You really need the connections.

Good luck!

I'd go with acting classes before a coach or agent. Radio and VO are two different fields realistically. Your biggest competition will be with those who have the range and ability to own the backstory to the copy...and languages, characters..etc..

But...I do agree about connections. Networking. Networking. Networking.

I highly recommend contacting Edge Studio (www.edgestudio.com). David and the Edge Studio professionals offer verrrry inexpensive voice evaluations which are brutally honest and will - should they feel you have a future in voiceovers - pinpoint the market niches that make sense for you. They also offer reasonably priced but vocal coaching, group and individual training, group and individual marketing/networking, production and representation services. I think highly of them and, unlike some other shops, really trust them.
