Using Sports Figures to Act as TV "Executive Producers"

I don't know what Stephen Curry knows about miniature golf or producing television shows. But he is the Executive Producer of an ABC summer replacement series "Holy Moley." It's an extreme version of miniature golf, part of ABC's summer of "Fun and Games" including reboots of Card Sharks, Press Your Luck, and the return of previous summer versions of Match Game, To Tell The Truth and $100,000 Pyramid.

I guess Curry plays golf in the off season and he's made many TV appearances. But Executive Producer? I get the feeling it's a chance for him to build his name recognition. And perhaps he has invested money in the series and stands to make a good return if it's successful. Last year LeBron James did something similar with another game show, whose name I don't remember.

And currently Justin Timberlake is listed as the Executive Producer of "Spin The Wheel," a Fox game show. In each case, Timberlake, James and Curry appear at the beginning of the show to tell us what it's about and how exciting it will be. I would imagine it took each of them only an hour or two to rehearse their lines and deliver them before the camera, which will be rolled at the start of each show through the season.

For some time now, stars of shows get their names listed as Producer or Executive Producer, even if their involvement is minimal. Maybe in this case, it's a back-door way to get another check. We'll give you $100,000 per episode, and another $10,000 as executive producer. James Spader is a producer on Blacklist, Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams on Suits, Julianna Margulies on The Good Wife, etc.

Welcome to the dog days of summer. Even though the game shows to me are marginally more interesting to me than the largely scripted shows they replace, they seem slow and plodding in pace compared to shows like Jeopardy.

Having a celebrity exec. producer could be a sort of "star" endorsement for a game show. "Holey Moley" will need more help than Stephen Curry's name recognition can provide.

Executive Producer normally means they provide the money. Not typically a creative role, although it can be.

But yes, it can also be another way to get paid. Like everything, it's negotiable.

"Holy Moley." is a modified version of Wipeout though that Aired on ABC a few years ago.

But then again in the case of Curry he would have to appear on other commercials like the Kaiser Permanente spots in Northern California given that the Golden State Warriors is a sponsor of them. I understand that Holy Moley would have to end as soon as the NBA and Golden State Warriors have to start their pre-season though.

Elizabeth Banks is listed as one of the EP's for the new "Press Your Luck." Which made me think, was she a fan of the original series when she was a kid, or is it just an honorary tltle?

By the way, the producers of "Spin The Wheel" need to give a little credit to Merv Griffin for originating the idea of a multi-colored wheel where someone can land and get cash or prizes.
