Utica - Rome Has Needed A Hip Hop - R&B Station!

Since The Late 70's there has been a need for a local Hip Hop - R&B Station day parted with classic 70's and 80's R&B. Night time mix shows with local and regional DJ talent. Not just a on air personality faking it with pre-mix services. Sunday with old school night. Not some CHR CC Puke for a change not everyone is 14 that likes Hip Hop.

I hate to sound like a big old fat cat running a station but, if I owned a station and you approached me with that idea, I would ask one question: How would it make me money?

Local mom & pops and agencies will buy the Morning, Day & Drive. Then clubs, bars, restaurants & national pi's for night. It works you just have to realize that just as many or more white people listen to Hip Hop and R&B as Black People. Otherwise The Boogie, JJ's, Milo's, Lily's, Palm Beach Club, Aprils, The Waterfront..... Would never had made it. Or had Hundreds of people there per night. It's time for something different in Utica-Rome. How About a Sports FM. Just stop feeding the same crap in a new box with a new logo. BTW "The New" should be like milk and have an expiration date on it. "The New" I've heard stations used that line for up to 2 years after changing format.

Hip Hop and R&B has a preception that is very difficult to sell. It may do well in some markets that can demographically sustain it but with businesses it's a tough sell regardless of ratings. Now if your a Top 40 in a market with out a Hip Hop and R&B station then daypart programming and a "format change" late nights or weekends nights when it makes sense would be cool! Service your market.

I'm with ya...we/ the public aren't stupid, two years after you sign on you are NOT "new", duh! A few months maybe, a book but that's it!

Your enthusiasm for hip-hop is admirable, but please take a look at the US census or the census figures in the first ten pages of the Arbitron report for Utica-Rome. 12-24 and 12-34 is a tough nut to crack. U-R is an aging market. No crime in that, but the market seems to prefer Country, Classic Rock, Classic Hits and AC. Stations can't count on the bar-band-entertainment sector and the PIs to make a buck. They have to get the 25-54 clients that are more inclined to spend the bucks where the bodies are. That would be Country, Classic Rock, Classic Hits and AC. Sorry. To quote Bruce Hornsby and the Range (AC and Classic Hits song), "that's just the way it is."
