Utica Rome ratings

Reliable sources say that WOUR went crazy in the new ratings and actually have double digits 12+ OVERALL for the first time since the 90'S.If true, pretty amazing to see double digits 12+ on a rock station in this day and age.

Uh, what ratings would that be, since Galaxy doesn't subscribe to Arbitron?

Arbitron ratings for Utica and Syracuse came out Wednesday morning at 10-AM. Without listing actual numbers because of legal issues, I can tell you that WOUR did go up tremendously! They actually tied WLZW for 2nd place in 12+. WFRG was #1 over both WLZW and WOUR in 12+ by 4 points. In men, WOUR was #1 25-54 by 4 points over FROG Monday-Sunday and by about 2 to 4 shares in every daypart. In women 25-54, FROG and WLZW tied for first. Believe it or not, WOUR was 2nd, and WODZ who had another up book was third. WODZ, is the sleeper. Just think if Regent ever paid attention to that station where it could possibly be right now. WUMX way down, KISS flat to slightly lower, K-Rock up slightly, depending upon demos, and Keeler, on WXUR, just a blip on the rating screen.

That Classic Rock WOUR did (does) well, without regard to how "good" or "bad" it's programmed, is really no surprise, especially given the demographics of Utica-Rome. If Buffalo is considered to be a "graying community" (which it is) U-R can only be as gray, if not grayer. Equally, the "surprising" success of Regent's WODZ, which, last time I heard, was musically "in the sweet spot" with a few exceptions, but embarrassing in that cold ending songs were fading out and gaps of dead air could be heard between songs. Blame that on badly placed EOMs and inattention to detail. This could be a by-product of a PD doing four things at once. Other than that, it was listenable. With the economy as tight as it is, you'd expect more stations to "go where the listeners are" and drill for oil in furtile ground. By this I mean that Classic Hits (formerly "Oldies") with modfications to accomodate 80s (and even some format compatible early 90s) hits can be as successful as Classic Rock. The distinction between the formats being that Classic Rock is an artist-group driven format while Classic Hits is driven primarily by songs that were hits.

Not quite sure that I agree with your assumptions about classic rock.In many markets, with "older" demos, classic rock is a "3" or "4" share format 12+.Strong Men 25-54 and "decent" Adults 25-54. If Admans numbers are correct, WOUR is second with ADULTS 25-54,second with WOMEN 25-54 and first with Men 25-54 by a lot over FROG.I am not sure that there is another classic rock station in the country in a market the size of this that can say that. In fact,I'd be interested to see how many classic rockers in America have double digits 12+.I bet it's not more than a handful.
So to your point, there is doing "good" and then there is doing what WOUR just did.Which is much more than "good".

Good points, SIA. A Double digit 12+ for WOUR and Classic Rock might be considered grounds for circumspection these days. It could be WOUR "got kissed." But a Classic Rocker putting up strong 25-54 numbers for Men and even Women comes as no surprise here. I've seen that movie dozens of times and got the t-shirt, too. (I was tempted to say "hundreds of times" but that might lead you to believe I'm long in the tooth. Let's just say I'm "in the demo" and leave it at that.)

In Buffalo, 97 Rock puts up immense 12+ numbers, even "out of" Bills football season. Even though their 12+ Spring 09 book is one of the weakest in years, 97 Rock is a strong performer "in demo," having placed #1 P25-54 and consistently placing #1 M25-54 in many dayparts as well s Mon-Sun, 6a-mid. That WOUR is #1 M25-54 isn't surprising, even considering Frog's dominance in U-R. Still, you're right about that 12+ being as strong as reported.

As is often said of ratings and Arbitron in particular, "Sometimes you're the bat, sometimes you're the ball."

even if it spiked to #1 12+. I wouldn't be able to take credit for it. The book system just doesn't work that way. You can see trends, but one ratings period in a vacuum does not tell you anything definitive. No one has any idea how a radio show is going to sound in the first month, let alone 6 months. I didn't have any imaging, anything established, or any sense of comfort or consistency. I have hosted shows that eventually went to #1, and it takes a great deal of patience to accomplish that. TONS of patience. A show must find its voice, and I was only on for a month.
