UTSA radio?

Last year there was talk that UTSA was going to get an AM station, KROW. There was a website and a group on thefacebook.com for the station. Are there any insights about a liscence application of if there will ever be a radio station for UTSA? I'd rather see it on FM. It would be nice for UTSA to compete with Trinity and SAC. Maybe have world/cultural or even a central/south American latin format Brazillian, bossa nova, folk, stuff like that.

I'm about 7 years late and I see this never happened.

But yeah I agree it would be an excellent idea. FM FTW nowadays.

Of course Border could sell 103.1, or 104.1. Or Cox could sell 106.7 to UT. But if I were UTSA and wanted a radio station I would go after Univision's 95.1 as it's COL is Comfort, not too far away from the UTSA campus. Univision could then acquire 106.7 from Cox and flip it to it's current format.

In the current budget climate the state would not allow a public university to buy a radio station unless it had evidence that it could pay off the purchase price and operating costs. I believe KUT has that kind of listener and underwriter support. It would be very hard for a startup to do this unless it had check in hand from a single donor or a successful fundraising campaign to cover the purchase.

Not going to happen. As Fred mentions, without substantial underwriting support, a public entity isn't going to be able to buy a full-power station. The underwriting support isn't there for UTSA because it doesn't have a program in place already. The only other option would be a donation, which neither Cox nor Univision would do (at least not in terms of a full-power class C or C1 FM).

As much as I love broadcasting, I'm not convinced the state needs to throw money at another academic program to produce people with the academic credentials to work in radio. There aren't enough jobs for the graduates these programs already produce.

UTSA's growth is focused on STEM programs, because these programs bring in grant funding. TPTB there know that they can't count on the state to fund anything and the governor is digging in his heels on preventing tuition increases.

It's been talked about for almost nine years now.
Found this on the web. Click here for the rest of the story:

KROW Radio broadcasting soon
September 28, 2005

If Richard Knight has his way, UTSA will be web casting within a week.

Knight has been working with John Kaulfus, executive director of the University Center (UC) and student activities.

Kaulfus cautions that he is not the official advisor for Knight and his fellow radio pioneers, but he has been working with them to find possible space and founding.

"I represent the UC. As a person that manages that property, I am always aware of students and student organizations that need to use that property," Kaulfus said. "Any student group can come to me and say we need some space, and I will listen to them."

According to Kaulfus, Knight approached him in Aug of 2004 and made him aware of the students' desire for a radio station.

KUT could organize such a drive, couldn't they? After all UTSA is UT but at San Antonio.
It could happen. But they have to see how successful they are with KUTX first, I mean I would if I were in their shoes. I wouldn't count on it until about 2-4 years from now. U of H took a long time to add another FM station. I could see such a thing in the future, but not now.

They could also get some underwriting by Bio Med industries coming to the Alamo City.
It's interesting how a Community College has a broadcast station down there vs. Austin's Community College which has a PEG TV channel here. Plus, San Antonio wants to focus on higher education says Mayor Julian Castro, so I wouldn't be surprised if such a move would be in the cards by 2015 at the earliest.

I'm optimistic about this one.

Maybe so, but don't think for a moment that KUT or UT Austin will be of any help. That's like Chevy helping sell Buicks.

You have to remember that UTSA, like the other schools in the UT system, is completely independent of the Austin institution. All are under the UT Board of Regents, and are not satellite campuses of the Austin school by any stretch of the imagination.

The mission of UTSA is to become a Tier I school, on the same level as Texas Tech, A&M or the others. Indeed, a campus-based radio station would be a large part of that. However, IIRC NPR is already well represented in San Antonio meaning that some of that donor money is already committed.

This is the 21st century. UTSA should consider starting an online station from the ground up. Their target audience can be the students and faculty listening on their computers and smart phones. The shows can be live streamed and then archived for podcast. They can be audio and/or video. And as a non-broadcast station they can sell ads in addition to asking listeners for donations. This is an idea that has a lot of possibilities at a very low start-up cost.

Not easily. Regardless of who were to organize such a fund raiser, it would have to start from zero, or very close. KUT has zero-to-very few underwriters and contributors in San Antonio. When KUT came up with the plan to buy 98.9, they had a solid base of underwriters and supporters, but they were already in Austin. You don't find many Austin businesses buying ads in San Antonio, and most underwriters would feel the same. There's just not a strong enough return on that investment. You might find a few altruistic donors or ones who'll donate so they can be recognized by more people, but there won't be very many of them.

How? Most of them aren't going to underwrite without knowing you have listeners. When you start a radio station from the ground up, you can count on losing money for a full two years. Until you can prove you have an audience they want, most of the advertisers aren't coming to you, and you're going to have very little luck pounding the streets with your sales department unless you practically give it away.
