Utter speculation: 107.5 Classic Rock?

I'm basing this on two things:

1) Y-102's sudden use of "Classic Rock Hits" as a liner. When word leaks out about a new station's format, competitors will sometimes try to cause some confusion by co-opting the new station's slogans.

2) All of a sudden, MGK is going to pick up Alice Cooper's evening classic rock show from 10 PM to 1 AM. What good reason does MGK have for picking up the program? Perhaps: This allows MGK to keep someone else from picking up Cooper's show.

Is the writing on the wall for 107.5?

Nice thoughts. But if true, what would Nassau be thinking? Classic Rock? I can't say I agree with that move, but maybe they know something more about the Berks population than I do. Unless they're going to market this new station to the non-Berks population.

I would think there would be a good audience for classic rock in the small towns of Berks and western Montgomery and Lehigh counties. But Y-102 has always held on to that audience to date. There was some speculation here that they would simulcast with 97.5, but according to the email posted here a few weeks back they are hiring all new jocks, sales, etc. Nassau in the past had separate "Hawks" playing classic rock all over the eastern Pa/NJ area, so I guess this could happen, although country seems a good bet too. If that March 3rd date someone posted for a format change is good, I guess we'll know soon.

I'd immediately discount the MGK pickup as a coincidence. 107.5 is not going to impact 102.9, and MGK already has a classic rock competitor on 97.5. Anything MGK does is unrelated to what 107.5 does.

As for the Y102 repositioning, I'd say Y102 definitely *thinks* 107.5 is going to be Classic Rock. It makes some sense considering Nassau's history.

That doesn't mean Y102 is right in its assumption though. There have been stations in the past making defensive moves like this, only to end up completely wrong about their competitor's intentions. I'd be surprised if 99.9 and 107.5 were broadcasting such similar formats. There's too much overlap there.

Considering Y102's recent move to Classic Rock, I'd love to see Nassau sign on a heavily-dayparted CHR a la PST, and steal all of the listeners who prefer the current music that Y102 just jettisoned.

I agree. I'd also like to see Nassau launch a CHR format on 107.5, similar to 94.5 PST. I don't understand a country format on 107.5. In the Lehigh Valley, you have 96.1 Cat Country. In Montgomery County, you have 92.5 WXTU. In Berks County, you have 105.1 WIOV. These are all well established country music stations in each respective area.

You also can get the H'burg area stations pretty good, save Red. So add Bob to the overcrowded Country list.
______________

A few years ago when a certain Berks station thought WIOV was about to flip,
the jumped the gun and started repositioning themselves. IOV never flipped...
Just a reminder that rumor can make a station assume....

Was that the short time where mainstream CHR was on Y102 in between lives as Rock Hits?
______________

Symbolism......what (I think) Mr. Shannon is trying to say is...

"Hi, we've been the market leader since pick a year, and guess what? We'll still be here long after this goes down".

I follow the money to Perkiomen Avenue, sir!
______________
