Is it just me, or does V102.5 have a golden opportunity to take their nothing numbers (no slight on Dean - a super, seasoned, and well proven on-air talent) and go after Mix 92.9's audience with a "Fresh" format? Seriously, the talent is out there and on the loose. The signal is there. All that is needed is a little money thrown at it, a tweak of music, a "fresh" new image, to ditch the satellite programming, and to have a strategic plan to take down Mix 92.9.
Mix IS a vulnerable station, just nobody has had the real cojones to take them down. The Wolf debuted as an inside out version of Mix 92.9. Instead of an AC station that occasionally plays some country, The Wolf signed on as a country station that occasionally plays some AC music. Pure Sebastian brilliance. Cumulus even gave it their best a solid half-assed effort at Star 97 with half the signal. Now, in Clarksville, Q108 dominates and competes ratings wise with Hopkinsville stations and not Nashville where it's signal is not as strong. However, I truly believe that if Q108 had better Nashville signal strength, it would have stronger numbers here, and I stand by that and always have (before working there). However, 102.5 does cover both markets and has a strong enough signal that a focused format flip to a more contemporary, hip, not-so-family-friendly, AC approach might help it a great deal.
As for Lisa Manning... that's TOP SHELF there. Love her. How can you not? Musically, 102.5 is close, it just needs a new image, a full Nashville focus, a bigger budget, and to be something that's out the box and different. A station that plays AC music, but isn't so... well, boring and predictable. Why don't AC stations do gigs at martini lounges on Friday happy hours? Can't an AC station do a Saturday night dance party at a local club too? Mix's sister station up in Evansville does, and it does very well.
You know, just because you play office friendly music, doesn't mean you have to be "safe for the family". People DO drink. People DO party. Most of today's AC stations play a lot of very edgy music, and with so much of the pop/AC product that has been made in the last five years, one would think that a left-of-center approach to AC would do well in a city that is as progressive as a Nashville is. The name of the format IS adult contemporary. Shouldn't the format appeal to contemporary adults? Adults who are young, fun, parents (even), socially aware, community minded, and good humored?
Just my two cents. Would you like change or a full refund?
